Wouldn't they also need different servers in different regions? I would think ping rates will be greatly affected if everyone's connections pinged through one central location in the world. Anyone outside the US would have slower response times due to extra travel times.

Actually there are a LOT of ways to get around that. If you have time at some part of your day, check out how Netflix solved their issues. Their architecture is really cool, they rely on many different locations around the globe that stream to you. Good read, but localization is still an issue for a game like Destiny. Bungie would have to put in the dedicated servers in each region they have their game in or stick with a P2P connection in those regions, which people would still bitch about
