The $45 estimate is completely wrong... That having been said... Yes, I would estimate a $100,000 investment. Considering Bungie has made about a BILLION in profit... $100,000 is .0001 or .01% of that profit. So in the end... wtf Bungie where are our servers!?

  • I think my $45 estimate is accurate.

  • Try adding a few zeros on that estimate. About 10G upward to 100G for a server beffy enough to run the game. Even then each server is limited to a few players when you have a dedicated connection to it. Not to mention the networking equipment needs to service 10,000 or more servers in a farm. Plus the fact they support 4 different platforms, as they can't run on the same server together. If they went exclusive to xbox then they could have used their farm that maintains close to 300,000 servers.

They already have some server capabilities so my estimate is pretty spot on. But I will humor you... Even a million dollar investment (10 times my original estimate) into this game is .001 or .1% of Bungie's profit. It is a negligible cost at best and in reality it is an investment in their "ten year plan" game as well as an investment in the community that has helped to make Bungie so profitable. Many corporations actually include in their budgets 1% allowances for "bad debt/uncollectable transactions" aka people who won't pay and would rather have creditors after them. So if the average company can write off 1% for the anticipation of customers that won't fully pay, why can't Bungie write off .1% for consumers who have fully paid and continue to pay into their games. ...Just a thought

  • To quote a commercial "That's not how any of this works" I work for a furniture company and we have 8 physical servers that run everything from email to whs, we have ~100G in just servers and network equipment. That doesn't count admin pay, power, cooling, maintenance agreements, software fees, upkeep, off site storage fees, backup equipment and tapes, etc. This services ~45 employees and 15 reps, now multiple that by a few hundred thousand users plus multiple locations to service every country the game runs in, 100G won't come close to paying for power each year. Oh yea total redesign on how the game operates and communicates with every platform and user. Right now their servers only connect you to a game, with dedicated they would have to host it also, much more overhead and fewer users on each server.
