Sorry, but this is an extremely ignorant view. $45 for a barebones server that isn't optimized for a specific game, nor can it handle several instances of the game running at once. You're also looking at a US price, but there would need to be server FARMS around the world in several strategic places. This requires planning. It requires rewriting game code to run on a dedicated server versus peer-to-peer. It requires PURCHASING (not renting rinky-dink machines, which is what you're looking at) the hardware. It involves so much more than what you might think. Let's break this down: NOTE - the following is an extremely low estimate 1) General planning: At least 75 man hours at an average salary of ~$30/hr * 20 or so employees. $45,000 2) Purchasing quality servers, internet service, etc: minimum of $400 per machine @ ~ 200 machines worldwide. $80,000 2) Development of dedicated server support: At least 75 man hours at an average salary of ~$30/hr * 15 or so employees. $33,750 4) Patch certification across all platforms: A few thousand per considering man hours. Let's say $10,000 total 5) Post-deployment support: minimum $8,000/year Minimum cost: $176,750. Remember that's COST, and doesn't take into account the amount of time it will take

 • Right....well...they made billions on Destiny. So...kind of not getting the point you are trying to make?

 • Still chump change given the revenue generated. I would expect them to agree a commercial contract with a provider, takes a lot of the risk away if you agree proper pricing based on activity.

 • How much has bungie made off the micro transactions? Plus the people who rebought the game when y2 came out to get the stuff that y1 players were getting excluded on. I think they could afford some servers for their game. The Time it would take yes I agree its gonna take time. But at least they would have a valid running pvp. Not this lagging around bull that they have now.

 • Didn't Bungie talk about 500 million dollars budget for Destiny? So what is the big deal about a few million for dedicated servers?

 • So even if it costs 200,000$ thats nothing compared to their budget and their profits, they shoulve already done it

 • Just an example, dont get your panties in a bunch here people..... lets say there are 25 million people that have atleast bought the original destiny. 25,000,000 x $59.95(US Price) = $ 1,498,750,000 now a lot of those people probably stopped playing the game before TDB, or before HOW. but lets say half bought both TDB and HOW... $20(TDB) + $20(HOW) = $40 x 12,000,000 = $480,000,000 and one step further if only half of those people bought TTK, $40 x 6,000,000 = $240,000,000 That is a grand total of 2,218,750,000 over 2 billion dollars . Of course that number should be a lot higher cause most everyone bought all three DLCs and only a majority probably bought the collectors edition or one of the f me bundles they offered around Christmas. ill take it one step further for salaries of employees. if the median salary of a game developer, on the high end, is 55k and they had 100 people that's only 550,000 in the first year of gaming. they could afford to pay over 100 people that for the span of the 10 year plan and still wipe their ass with money in all 10 years, every day, twice a day. So the 176,750 tripled for sake of an argument, is at just under the amount they are paying there employees for 10 years. if they cant manage a dedicated server even on only next gen consoles then I would really like to see the business model/plan for this game to see where the hell all the money went. Cause it is outrageous.. again my claims on the 25 million players is just heresay im not sure how many people actually bought the game, or the DLC, this whole post is just an example at how the money is being spent who knows where.
HERE I WAS ADAMANTLY DEFENDING YOU DAY AFTER DAY ABOUT SERVERS BUT THEY COST LESS THAN A LIVE BEAVER.
So disappointed right now. Ponethepoon led me to believe a live beaver was something I as a middle class salary slave could easily afford, but they're in fact more than $176,750! I'm disappointed, thanks for straightening me out tho, would have been heart wrenching if I'd had time to tell the kids before reading your comment and then let them down.

 • I think you're lowballing the figure: I imagine the real costs would be much higher. But I still believe that would have fit comfortably into the proposed total budget of $140 million allocated for Destiny's Xbox 360 development: http://www.develop-online.net/interview/revealed-the-huge-promises-and-secret-stipulations-of-the-bungie-activision-deal/0117411 At the very least, for an online-only game, this should have been the first thing discussed in development.

 • They did...they discussed what they could get away with. Well before launch i posted on both facebook and twitter to bungie/deej about dedis i got no reply, they only answer questions that make them look good.
