Not sure if this is bait or not, but I agree with several people below.
Bungie COULD afford dedicated servers, but it would be several thousands of dollars per server.

It wouldn't be several thousand per sever. Rather, each server would cost in the low hundreds, and they would have to buy very many of them, and pay monthly

That would have to be one HELL of a deal. My iPhone cost several hundred dollars. Heck, my Xbox One was in the low hundreds (so is a PS4). I'm going to guess these babies need to be dense and resilient/redundant. You can't get those qualities at a low price without: -Selling one's (or several other's) souls -Sacrifice to a god -Building them yourself, using chimps, you paid with bananas -Robbing someone -Making a wish (genie, falling star, or otherwise)
