Audio headaches

Hello, I am currently running destiny on a xbox 360 using a wired headset. What I don't understand is why I can't hear anything on the headset. I am not part of any fireteam. do I need to be. Please help.

In order to hear other players' communication in Destiny, you will need to be in a fire team or party.
