Some people buy Destiny, and they already have friends who have the game. They are easily carried and assisted through everything in the game, given the best tips and methods to reach a high light level quickly.
Then there are those who don't have friends who play, some might not even have Xbox Live/PS plus, and are forced to figure out everything themselves, which leads to a longer grind which is frustrating and eventually leads to player to stop playing (or in real world terms- turn to crime)
