I don't think Activision has a say in the matter. The board of directors represent the share holders of the company (investors).
If they are changing out the chief executive you can be sure that the share holders are not happy with the financial results that the game has brought in.
Let's face it, we all love this game but we all know that it turned out to be a huge let down as well. We know it could be way better than what it is. That's what keeps people coming back and spending money.
It's always comes down to earnings. It is a business after all and bungie is a publicly traded company that has a legal obligation to its share holders to maximize profits.
Obviously, many of the rumors about Bungies financial problems lately may very well be true.

This is the post I have been searching for. Most average gamers are oblivious to (and its wrongn to be so) the infrastructure of huge projects. "Unfortunately," Destiny is a part of a very large "project" and financial megahouse with insane investments. Their number 1 priority is making money and sadly, has much less control than let's say, Blizzard and Activision who has much more autonomy. I am mostly worried that Bungie has little control over focusing on player satisfaction and good game design over meeting financial quotas. Perhaps Bungie doesnhave the drive, but lack the experience: In that.. They have never made a game like "this" before (heavy mmo influence and rog mechanics in a shared world) Little experience in juggling the stress of financial quota and good game design

Yeah Marty, won a law suit against Bungie and part of it was because they tried to cut him out of his stock among other monies belonging to rights that he held One can only assume it was because of the rift between him and Ryan. It solidifies the idea that the decision to fire Marty, and rework the game at the last minute was a bad one.
