Do not have exotic sword, but if i were to get spin metal, hell ya i would buy from all my legendary marks - nothing else to spend them on anyway... not sure how many is needed, but could easily get 500 spin metal from it within a week - by simply playing

No you don't need spinmetal, you have to farm the actual plant to get these "crystals" which are the ones that are needed to build the exotic sword. Btw each type of sword have different requirements, one is spinmetal, the other is relic iron and I think the arc one is helium filaments or spirit bloom.

That blows - but oh well i have not gotten that quest or an idea of how to get it anyway

Doesn't work. You can only do that particular part of the mission by the farming process. It'll give you the special spin metal approx every 10 to 12 pick ups. Spin metal from chests doesn't count either.
