Lives of ARC Chapter 9: Taking it Slow

"Ow! Gale, you don't need to play doctor on me... Ow! There medical frames that could check this out. Ow!" Edward sat on the couch in his house. Gale forced him to prop his leg on the coffee table so she could look at it. "What are they going to do about this?! This is a plasma cut! I bet they couldn't do better..." "I bet they could put a bandage on..." Edward sat up and looked to Gale, a cheesy grin crossed his face. Gale stood up. "Oh really? Is that all you think it is?" Gale slapped Edward's leg, right on the wound. "Oooww! Son of a...!" Edward stiffened up and clenched his fists as the pain shot through his body. Gale sat down by Edward and laid her head on his shoulder. "How's your arm?" "Yeaaahhh... don't." "Gaaale?! Haaax?! Where are you two?!" Edward sat up. Dust and blood stained his white shirt. He looked around, he was back in the Cosmodrome. He tried to stand up, but he was too weak and fell on his hands. He tried again, able to stand up this time. "Gaaale?!! Haaax?!! Where are- son of a...!" Edward rolled over and looked up. Above him was a large Fallen, only it's upper right arm was still natural. Half of it's face was scarred. It grabbed Edward, the metal fingers digging in just above Edward's eyes, and dragged him across the rocky surface. "You made me suffer in the pits of Venus, burning in the wreckage of my home! This.. is your home... you shall suffer!" barked the Fallen. The Fallen tightened his grip on Edward's skull, blood dripping from his eyes. Braxis lifted Edward up, showing him Gale sitting on her knees. "Gale? Gale?!" Edward watched as two vandals lifted her head up. "Kill her..." spoke Braxis, holding Edward back. The vandals jabbed stabbed Gale through her chest. Her white dress stained with blood. "GAAALLLEEEE!!" Edward rose up in bed, a sidearm in hand! The room was still and dark. He took deep breaths and sat the weapon down. Kelly floated in. "Are you alright, daddy? What's wrong?" "I'm okay, Kelly, just nightmares..." Edward wiped the sweat off of his face. Not long after, Gale ran into the room. "Ed. What is wrong?" she sat down beside Edward. "It was Braxis. He forced me to watch you... to watch you die. A staff went through your heart." Edward tried to cover his emotions. "I can't watch you die, Gale. I can't!" Gale glanced down to her chest, then looked to Edward. She placed her hand on his cheek. "Whatever it is that plaques you, it is just a dream. It will not foreshadow anything. We will be fine." Edward took Gale's hand and held it. "It still plaques me though. I won't let it happen." "I know you won't." Gale kissed Edward's forehead, then left. "Well, good night, daddy." Kelly flew out of the room. Gale walked back to her apartment. She headed for the bathroom, removed her shirt, and looked in the mirror. A scar sat just right of her heart. "Why would he dream my death so well? What chance that I have a mark to match it?" "Well, Guardians don't remember their past life. Most don't, at least. Even if he is only remembering your past death, he died first, so he would have no idea how you died. I don't even know what killed you... Maybe it is the Traveler telling him something.?." Drake floated in the hallway, looking away. Gale turned off the lights and walked out. "Okay, I'm dressed. So, either he is remembering my death, which he shouldn't know about. Or he is actually dreaming about my future." Drake turned around. "But Braxis is dead. Kelly and I made that quite evident. He won't be hurting you, Edward, or Haxx anytime soon." The rest of Edward's night was full of toss and turns, several times of waking up, and a sweat soaked shirt. Time and time again, he found himself wielding his knife or sidearm. The next morning, Edward got up, went into the kitchen, and got a bowl of cereal. Edward sat at the table and watched the news. There was nothing to report. After Edward finished breakfast, he got dressed and walked around the Tower. "Good morning, Hayes. Why aren't you in your turnout gear?" asked Cayde as he patted Edward's shoulder. "Well, the crazed Fallen Baron is dead and none of the bounties for today look interesting. I guess we're just taking it slow. How's Zavala doing?" Edward walked with Cayde to the Hall of Guardians. "Uh, pissed..." "As usual?" "Not this time... he found one of my home recordings." "That's it?" "Well, we were in a crisis. Actually, we were trying to rescue a Guardian that was in a crisis." "And in all of that, he found-" "Yeah." "And the the noises-" "Yeah.." "And the Hall-" "Yeah... Anyways! It appears they are calling me back. You would think I would be suspended from the Vanguard for a few days, but nope! Still required..." After Cayde walked to the Vanguard table, Edward walked back to the apartments. He knocked on the door and waited. C.P. opened the and stared at Edward for a second. "Hello." Edward gave a small smile. "Is Haxx available?" C.P. didn't say anything, just continued to stare at Edward. "Is this.. a bad time? Is he here?" asked Edward again. This time C.P. expanded his shell in emphasis. "Uh?" Edward stood there not knowing what's going on. C.P.'s eye flickered red for a second before switching back. "Good morning, Captain. What seems to be the situation?" "Haxx?" Edward looked intently at the ghost. "Yes, Sir. Is the situation urgent?" "What?.." Edward was still focused on the ghost. "Oh, no. I just came by to visit." "Okay. I will be there momentarily." C.P.'s eye flickered again and the Silent ghost flew off. "What the h***?" Edward whispered to himself. Haxx walked into the room. "What can I do for you, Sir?" "Please, it's Edward. Uhhh, I don't know. Just here to chat. You like board games?" Edward aimlessly stumbled around the apartment before pulling out a box and sitting it on the table. Haxx sat down and set up the pieces. "You still haven't answered my question: What are you wanting? D-6." "Do Exos dream? I mean, you are programmed, some programmed based off of the creator's memory, but can your computer chips run thoughts and possibilities like a dream? Miss. F-2." "I, for one, could say I 'dream'. Usually it is just playbacks of previous events. What's going on? Miss. A-3." Haxx looked at his board. "I'm confused. Last night I had a dream that Braxis made me watch Gale die. It seemed so real, as if it happened before. The thing is: if it did happen, I died first. I shouldn't have known what happened. The other option is that it will happen, or it could and I need to stop it." Edward leaned forward and checked his board. "...Hit." "When a Guardian is resurrected, they have no memory of their past life, that is, for organic beings. So, even if you died after Gale, you would not know how she died. Now, Braxis is dead. We watched his ketch fall into the abyss. Foreseeing her next death is highly unlikely." Haxx placed a tack on his board. "Is that always the case? It's rare but it is possible that a Guardian could remember one's past. Who's to say I didn't die after Gale? E-10." Edward scanned his board. "Would you let your attacker hurt Gale first? Miss. A-4." Haxx tapped his finger on the table. "Eh, true. And Braxis is dead so the universe wouldn't have to warn me of him." Edward looked down. "D***it... sunk." Haxx smiled. He placed another tack on his board. Edward checked a notification on his wrist. "Come on, Zavala wants to talk." Edward and Haxx headed for the Hall of Guardians. As they stood at the end of the table, Commander Zavala stiffened his stance. "Hello, thank you for coming on such sort notice. We need to get straight to business. Fallen activity on the moon has increased substantially. We need you to check it out."
