TL;DR A Dad decided to try and complete Oryx challenge as a surprise on his son's account who has had horrible luck with pickup groups. Nice group lets his 312 Titan join. Completed challenge.
Right now I feel giddy. Yes giddy. Not much can do that anymore at 46. Why am I giddy? Destiny is a game my son (14) and I both play. It's a good shared interest we have a lot of talks, one of many things to bond over (he is in scouts as well and I am an adult leader in his troop).
Anyway, enough background. He is better at destiny than I am but has had phenomenally bad luck in oryx challenge pickup groups. I've watched him get so close only to have a glitch or random event cause the group to fail.
This week I did challenge on all three of my characters chasing the 320 helmet (no such luck, all 320 primaries). I had a sleepless night on Friday taking care of an upgrade for work, as such I crashed at 8pm. Wife woke me up at 11pm. I decided to get up and watch some TV. But I didn't.
I decided to try and get Oryx for him. His Titan was only 312 but had a touch. I was getting no love on DestinyLFG sending messages with his char.
So I posted this with my 319:
Please Read: Looking to do Oryx Challenge with PSN CyberpunkDad. Want to surprise my son and complete it on his 312 Titan. Has TOM.
Long shot right? Remarkably I got an invite immediately. Oryx started out kinda rough. They wanted to do assigned plates, one person had trouble with knights in the front. One person couldn't do the assigned numbers and also wasn't on a mic. A lot of people might have just bailed, but we talked about and tried some different things.
We quickly abandoned assigned plates and went to numbers. Moving the Hunter to the middle with me. Having the other Titan that would have been in the middle drop a bubble and then go to 2. And we all just helped out with the guy who had trouble with knights when in the front.
We had a few wipes. Not gonna lie. But everyone stayed positive and we finished it! He got the 320 primary and a non harrowed head which was better than what he had. Went from 312 to 315. Got the ship he had so wanted. And is going to shit a brick and go nuts tomorrow.
Am I excited? /check
Does it feel like Christmas Eve? /check
Thanks again to the group that let me join. I really appreciate it, if you ever need a hand don't hesitate to add CIPHERSTONE (my account). Happy to give a hand.
Edit:
Thanks for all the comments guys (good/bad/snarky/mean/funny) they are all appreciated. This blew up way more than I ever thought.
Edit 2:
Was doing heroic raid today (2/3/16) and had something come up at daughters stage. Asked the kid if he could give me a hand, he rocked the rest of the raid and got my the harrowed Hunter helmet (314 but whose complaining) I was hoping would drop. I walked in at the loot phase and was super stoked because they did it in one run on heroic. Was great to be on the other end thanking him profusely.
