Some did buy them on sale others it didn't convince them. They figured no matter what I said that the new epansion if any were going to make them pay more money after the Taken King. I lost of lot of buddies to just playing other games.
Bear in mind I really really enjoy this game and I've purchased every DLC and still play daily or bi-daily.

Hmm, well it's entirely possible those that weren't already swayed may never be. I share your feeling about this game and even though I've taken a few weeks off here and there for other games I do find myself currently playing destiny multiple days a week. Good luck with trying to get everyone back!!
