I get that they wanted players to use more varied gear, but here's the thing; that mindset is totally for [i]their[/i] benefit, not [i]the players'[/i].
The initial 2.0 patch that dropped with TTK [i]greatly[/i] nerfed all of Y1, by [i]substantially[/i] reducing the effectiveness of individual "OP" weapons (like Thorn, or Ghally), as well as nerfing almost every [i]single[/i] Y1 perk by around 50-80%, on average. As a result, Y1 weapons are no where [i]near[/i] as powerful as they were, and have all balanced to Y2 levels.
And, in PvE environments, regardless of how prevalent any particular weapon may be, no one was ever [i]negatively[/i] affected by someone [i]else's[/i] gear choice, in the first place. In fact, it was probably a net [i]positive[/i], because it typically made fireteams stronger, overall.
I understand that the designers [i]want[/i] players to experience all the new content [i]AND[/i] gear they worked hard to make, and I'm not faulting them for it. But, considering that Y1 was already balanced with Y2, leaving Y1 gear behind is [i]entirely[/i] about forcing players to use new stuff for the [i]sake[/i] of using new stuff, and does nothing to [i]help[/i] players.
