Counterbalance pushes again upward recoil, so with doctrine recoiling straight up, you start at the body n it slowly goes upwards n hits the head, without counterbalance it goes above the head.
Arminius goes up n left, or up n right, so with counterbalance it'll still go left or right n miss the head.
You want braced frame and persistence

Fair enough. It's been a long time since rerolling a Spare Change.25 to try and get something done about that awful recoil pattern and I can't remember what I was looking for. I think I got a Rodeo/HLS combo and then got a Hopscotch Pilgrim 15 minutes later so never used it.
