You can't change the past because it already happened. If you went back in time and met yourself at this period it would be a cycle because before you travel you have already met yourself. Then you time travelled to meet yourself at this moment you already met yourself. So you'd be the young and the old and experience both and the meeting will happen which you'll then know you'll make traveling to meet yourself. And no such thing as alternate reality exists.
