Alright, let me explain where it says "we should own slaves," like you said it did. Which clearly from the text, it does not. The verses from Leviticus (which I assume are the main ones you're referencing) are instructions from God to the Jews. He is telling them that they are his people, and they are not to fight amongst another and enslave each other. But, since slaves were a large part of life in that time, God says they may (not that they should) get slaves from surrounding areas. Now, again this isn't saying that they are allowed to go out and kidnap salves, as it says in Exodus 21:16 "Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death." So nowhere does it say that we "should own salves" as you put it. God allowed the Jews to have slaves of the surrounding people, but not each other. In this allowance of salves, they are only allowed to have, well salves. That social category of slaves. But they are not allowed to go out and kidnap normal people, and make them salves. Now, let us remember that the slavery of that time was not the same as the slavery that most people think of, Civil War Slavery.
