SPOILER ALERT for those who have not seen the new StarWars movie. So Captain Phasma is a woman 0_0 Her armour has no feminine details or even a chest plate, I thought it was a guy until she spoke. The armour, the helmet, the colour, the cape even kinda pointed towards this character being a man. So is this an acceptable look for a woman or should it be more feminine? :/

  • Captain Phasma is also a useless character that did nothing more than help the rebels Undistinct armor that makes you assume she is a man doesn't mark her as an example. Denying your femininity doesn't make your armor better. We already know half the armor stuck in fiction is not going to work, but its a device for story-telling and character design. That being said, personality and actions matter a lot more from characters than their armor. In the same Star Wars analogy, Rey could be in a super skimpy, over-sexualized outfit and would still be a greater character than should-have-tripped-the-alarm-instead-of-lowering-the-shields-Phasma. Back to the actual topic of armor, her outfit makes no sense. I'm sure they'll make an explaination, but why is her armor silver? Its stupid. The problem in movies and video games is that they are pandering to the male viewer. RPGs make girls bikini clad because they started out in a male dominated market. Those kids playing bikini clad women went on to become modern game designers. They then make what they played as kids. Its getting better, but its culture.

  • If it's an RPG, the woman obviously has to have less clothing to be more protected.

  • Fiction, yes because it's visually distinct. Real Life, always form before function.

  • I think it shouldn't matter. If the character looks cool and recognizable, be they man or woman, I couldn't care less.

  • It's armor, not a swimsuit. If it isn't serving its purpose properly, you would be better off in nothing. At least you won't be weighed down and you can attempt to dodge.

  • Armor is armor, its primary purpose is to provide protection in battle. You could argue that armor could also be visually designed to look intimidating when considering the psychological aspect of warfare, but even that has nothing to do with looking masculine or feminine. This is in terms of reality, though. In fiction, you can do pretty much whatever you want, and bend the rules to make it work. That being said, it doesn't really matter what stormtrooper gear looks like. It blocks blaster damage about as well as a paper blocks a bulldozer, at least in the movies.

  • What exactly makes this armor masculine? How is this not feminine already, considering that it's worn by a female? What would make it look more feminine?

        • I think women in functional armor are far more attractive because it's a clear indication that they aren't stupid.

Full body battle armor on a woman is sexier than bitches with next to nothing on. The only female armor I like that has the boobplates belongs to the Sisters of Battle.

          • Depends on the scenario in question, I suppose. Real life, function before form. Video games, it depends on the genre. Maybe they have -blam!-awesome shields that allow them to have more flamboyant armour or something. Star Wars, blasters pretty much made personal armour obsolete, at least in Legends. They just use it to protect against all the other shit you run into in a battlefield, like shrapnel and debris. So, I guess it's a bit debatable. Still think function before form applies in this case though.

          • It's been proven that a "chest" plate for female armor is a terrible idea. Those areas can be crushed in and put a lot of pressure on a woman's chest. It also creates points for weapons to gravitate towards (see: cleavage). The flat breast plate on male armor is the superior design as it allows weapons to slide off and is the same way female armor is designed.

The actor is one of my favorites out there. At first, when she popped up on GoT I didnt really like her. It seemed that she was over dramatic but now shes a favorite.

            • Doesn't have to look feminine. But considering different types of bodies, odds are it will look feminine. Just based on physique alone.
