That's not only gameplay. Armor lock is basically just invincibility.

It's lore. Master Chief orbit landed safely thanks to armor lock in Halo 3. Technically.

It was a different armor lock, it just locked his armor in whatever position it was in until unlocked. Which is why it didn't unlock by itself.
