You raise a good point! I mean, you still went there and got the gear at some point. Doesn't transmogrification work like that? Like, you need to already have obtained the piece that you want to use the look of? So I mean, your gear (or its appearance) is still telling a story.

A new player could see you somewhere on patrol and seeing you with gear from outside the tower can say a lot about your character. A lot more than any grimoire value.
