Do People Oversell Dark Souls' Difficulty?

Dark Souls is made out to be this ridiculously difficult game with bosses that will annihilate you again and again.
I've been playing Dark Souls for the past week or so, and I've come to the conclusion that the majority of players are simply overselling the whole thing to make it seem like it's nearly impossible to play. The only reason I can imagine this game being nearly as difficult as everyone claims it to be is if someone isn't at all noticing and adapting to enemy attack patterns, or if they're taking on areas or enemies that they're entirely unprepared for. New Game+ and beyond, however, may be different, but I've yet to experience that for myself.
What are your thoughts? Is it as hard as people say, or is it all just a huge over-exaggeration?

Demon souls was alright, I still have it and yet to complete it. I was half way through with dark souls, but someone stole it. Never had a shot at DS2 and now DS3 will be out or is out. (I don't keep track of these things) But, yeah! I feel like they over sell the difficulty, there are spots that can be difficult if you forgot what to expect around the corner. Bosses can be quite difficult, but still fun and you just have to figure the mechanics before the mechanics kill you. In short, I poured most of my time into FFXIV and Destiny. I should have finished the first two while I had dark souls. Edit: Actually, I'll check out my trophy list when I'm not playing to see where I was on dark souls cause I am not completely sure.
