Neither Rhaegar or Viserys cared much for the purity of their bloodline. Rhaegar married Elia Martell (and possibly Lyanna Stark) and Viserys made Daenerys marry Khal Drogo rather than marrying her himself. That being said, Viserys was indeed quite pretentious about his family name.
