Germany and Russia were equally horrible, and we didn't nuke them. And a direct ground invasion wouldn't have been a necessity. We could easily have starved out the military engine via blockade and with Soviet involvement. We just decided we didn't want to wait, or risk the USSR gaining more footholds, so we decided to nuke two cities full of people into the ground instead. And the second bomb wasn't even needed, as Japan was already going to surrender.
