The day the Last City was breached started as a day like any other. And it was all because a fireteam followed the advice of a young titan named Hillard-13. A male exo, he lived among the residents of the city, trying to blend in with the crowd. He usually succeeded in his ploy, but his fellow guardians kept bugging him constantly. The hunter Lacey-01 was usually the worst, often tracking his bulkier and slower friend. And today was no different. As Hillard-13 woke up from his recharging cycle, he was greeted by the exo face of his partner. And it was not a happy surprise.
“HELLOOO, TITAN!” Lacey-01 screamed, ruining Hillard-13’s slow rise. “How are we doing today buddy? Come on, get up!” the antagonistic guardian said as he took Hillard-13 by the arm and ran him to a sink. “I’ll leave you alone while you spruce yourself up.” After the door was closed, the titan’s “eyes” grew accustomed to being awake. He lifted his head to look in the mirror and studied his features. His glowing blue eyes matched the color of his face plates, which matched the color of the tile behind him. An extra processor was on his forehead, giving him a Neanderthal-like look. After splashing his face with water to clear off a day's worth of dirt and grime. Hillard-13 turned around and opened the door. Lacey-01 was hefting around a rocket launcher that just so happened to be Hillard-13’s favorite.
“Put that down before it crushes you.” Hillard said. “I would hate for you to die on my first day in the fireteam.” Hillard-13 had worked with Lacey-01 before, but today he was actually part of his fireteam. The prospect of working with an elite hunter excited Hillard, but it also worried him. They were friends, but Lacey-01 was reckless and a danger to himself and others.
“Don't worry Hillard. I've used guns like this before. It is cool though.”
“Yeah, and it's recoil is enough to turn you into a pile of scrap. Oh wait! That's right, you already are.” Hillard-13 said, jabbing the hunter in the arm with his elbow. “Come on, let's head to the tower. I can't wait to meet the third guardian in our fireteam.” And with that, Hillard-13’s greatest adventure had begun.
They reached the tower soon after, where Lacey-01 put a hand on Hillard’s chest.
“ Give me a minute, I need to talk to Cayde-6 first.” Intrigued, Hillard-13 followed the hunter to the Vanguard hall. Hillard-13 had never been to the tower with Lacey before, and he noticed how everyone almost cowered in front of him. Eris Morn held her precious orb behind her, and even Lord Shaxx put a firm hand on his papers. As soon as Lacey-01 put a foot on the steps leading down to the Vanguard, he saw looks of disdain.
“Hey guys! I'm back! How are you Cayde, oh buddy, oh pal?” The Hunter Vanguard didn't even have to look up to know who it was. In fact, he put his palm to his forehead and said in a defeated voice,
“Oh goddammit, not him again.”
“What do you want now, hunter?” said Commander Zavala, with a barely concealed sigh. He looked to Ikora Rey, who was trying to ignore Lacey-01 by studying a map very intensely.
“I want what we all want,” replied Lacey-01. “ Fame. Fortune. A lifetime supply of glimmer.” He climbed onto the table and sat on Ikora’s books, he feet resting on Cayde-6’s maps. “But for now I'll take a new gun. And I am not going back to Banshee-44. He almost shot me last time!”
“Umm, yeah! You stole half of his arsenal! And then broke it!” Said Cayde, his metallic voice showing undeniably human anger as he stood upright with a start. Zavala looked at Cayde with enough force to destroy a hive tombship, and he reluctantly sat back down.
“If we give you a gun, will you leave us alone?” Bargained the commander, clearly against his will.
“Deal!” Exclaimed Lacey-01, taking advantage of Commander Zavala’s eagerness to see him leave. “I expect it within an hour.” He kept off the table and strode away confidently.
“How did you do that?” Asked Hillard-13 after he caught up to his ally.
“They love me. They just don't want to show it. Follow me, I'll bring you to your new warlock ally.”
“Warlock? Of course! Why did I expect to have a team without a useless nerd.” Hillard-13 had a vendetta against warlocks. He was once in a strike with a group of warlocks. Instead of fighting, then spent hours deciphering ruins, collecting golden age tech. In his mind, a warlock was useless in a fight.
“Don't think that this guy is useless. He's actually on of the best guardians I've ever seen. He's actually saved my life.” Lacey replied. He led him down into the depths of the tower, to where the guardians actually lived. In the crowd of exos, humans and awoken, it was hard to tell who was blessed with the Traveler’s Light, and who wasn't. Lacey-01 led Hillard through a confusing maze of rooms, and while the din of guardians lessened, the sounds of welding grew. Hillard-13 and Lacey-01 stepped into a large room, with the left wall covered in racks with vex weapons. To the right was the skeleton of a sparrow, which was hooked up to a very dangerous looking computer. Next to it was a large table with gun parts scattered over it. The ceiling had 5 hanging lamps, which struggled to illuminate the room. In the center of the room was a Fallen Walker, it's turret leaned against its side.
“Hey Briere! How are ya?” Shouted Lacey-01. From inside the Walker’s carcass, Hillard could hear clanking, and then an exo face popped out of the body.
“Lacey!” Shouted the new exo, and while the old friends embraced, Hillard took the time to study his features. It had a mainly bronze color with three dark blue stripes going down between the glowing cyan eyes. Near his ears there were what looked like stylish fins. Going up the forehead were kinds of slits, but he could not think of their purpose. After hugging his friend, the exo looked at Hillard.
“Hello there. I am Briere-42.” He said, thrusting his hand forward to Hillard. He took his hand and shook it firmly. Hillard awkwardly introduced himself, and tried to steer the conversation towards the mission at hand.
“Yes,” Briere-42 said. “ I need help getting something extremely valuable. To myself and the vanguard.”
“What is it?” Questioned Hillard.
“I need a living Fallen. Preferably a Captain from the House of Devils.”
“Why?”
“So that I can interrogate it. See, in my studies, I've found a lot of useful information. Where the Fallen heart is, where the pressure points are, and nerve clusters. I know how to break them, but now I need someone to break. Once I break the Vandal, I can figure out all the weaknesses of that house, and bring them down. Then it would just be us, the hive, and the Kings.” Briere-42 said as he went over to the table and started putting together a weapon.
“Do you have any idea where we should start looking?” Asked Hillard-13.
“Yeah, I've had Lacey do reconnaissance for me. I know exactly where a group of Kings are right now. I'll meet you in the tower hanger in an hour.” Responded Briere. Hillard and Lacey then left and headed to their ships.
They met in orbit about ten minutes later. After Briere-42 was declared fireteam leader, he told everyone else to descend to The Cosmodrome in Old Russia. Worriedly, Hillard took out his ghost.
“What do you think is going to happen?” Questioned Hillard.
“I don't know, but I can access the Vanguard files to see what happened on his previous missions.” His Ghost replied
“I didn't know you were allowed to access their files.” Said Hillard.
“I didn't say I was.” Said the Ghost in a mischievous voice. It then began scanning for a way through the Vanguard firewalls. “I don't see a way through yet. It's going to take me a while” Content with waiting, the titan piloted his Phaeton Class v2.1 down to the patrol start point in the Cosmodrome. As he teleported down, he felt a vicious cocktail of emotions stir inside of his processors. He was excited to be on a mission with a group of such honored guardians, he was worried about what that mission might bring, a he was scared that his reputation with the Vanguard might be damaged if he messed it up: But he was going to do what every good titan does. Get the job done.
This is just part one of a much longer story. This is my first attempt at a Fan Fiction. Thank you for reading if you got this far. Any constructive criticism is very appreciated. If you would like one of your guardians to be in the later installations, reply with which guardian of yours you would like to have, including a name, description of their face, and their attitude. I will add more to this story soon. Thank You!
