My personal story
Recently, I took a very, VERY long hiatus from Destiny to play most of the new games that came out (i.e. Overwatch, Doom) and some old games (i.e. Halo series, Bonerlands, etc). Keep in mind that before I took this break, I'd played Destiny almost every single day for a year and a half. I was playing Doom when I was using the "Double Shotty Combo" (both combat shotgun and super shotgun) and I was top of the leaderboards when I thought, "This shit needs to be nerfed", followed by, "WHAT MANNER OF SISSYNESS IS THIS? Just because something is performing well, it needs to be nerfed?" That little voice in the back of my head said that that's how Destiny manages to keep it's exotics in check. Then it dawned on me, that feeling I hadn't felt in a long time. I was having FUN in Doom, where I hadn't had fun in Crucible since before HoW, before the dark times. At that moment, I realized something.
DESTINY'S FANS HAVE RUINED THE GAME: A History Lesson
When Destiny launched back in September 2014, exotics were described as the best of the best, weapons obtained by feats of strength, the hardest activities in the game, etc. Ok, maybe all that didn't pan out, but the part about the best of the best was at least still true. Ice Breaker hit like a truck and had ammo to spare, Invective was the only true fully automatic shotgun, Gjallarhorn was the best boss melter in the game, Red Death could keep you in the fight longer, a Crucible gun with Crucible lore, designed for Crucible, The Last Word had an actual reason to hip-fire, Thorn not only stopped Regen, but also did damage. Then came the Mythoclast, the first gun worth calling a nerf for. The fair few people who actually got the gun, or got paired up realized this gun was broken. People getting 4 shot cross mapped, killed through walls because of Fusion rifle hit-scan, other nerf-worthy incidents. Bungie stomped out a weed before it became a problem, good for them. Then came Suros. A little less nerf-worthy, but certainly a problem. Then all was good, a few patches here and there, but nothing compared to the newest meta; The HoW Meta. Thorn, TLW, and Red Death. The 9 months meta. Thorn was kept in check by a low ammo count with slow reload. The Last Word was kept in check by actually requiring skill to accurately hip-fire. Red Death was always a good choice in Crucible. Then Thorn's ammo count was buffed to 150%, with a reload twice as fast, The Last Word was glitched to not require hip-fire, and Red Death was thrown in as practically the only counter for them. Ever since then, the Forums are constantly plagued by calls for nerfs, buffs, outlandishly ludicrous changes to be made, leading to the destruction of the best weapons in the game.
EXOTICS ARE NOW MOSTLY OBSOLETE
Think back to when you got your first exotic. You probably didn't get it fighting the Gas Wyrms of Jupiter, or helping to defend Twilight Gap or the Battle of Six Fronts. You probably got it from something mundane, like as a Strike reward or bottom of the team in Crucible or being a dreaded Xurner. But it didn't matter, it was special to you. "Wow, this weapon shoots poison!" "My gun reloads after every kill!" "This rifle regenerates ammo, that's so cool." It was a magical moment for most all of us, a weapon to be proud of. Now think about someone who just picked up the game recently, someone who is running around with his gunsmith Suros auto rifle rolled with glass half full and focused fire. He places 3rd in the crucible and gets the Suros Regime. "Oh wow, an exotic!" He compares the stats. "My legendary is better in every single way to this crappy exotic." His friend, with equally bad luck, finishes King's Fall and gets Thunderlord. But wait, he rolled a Qullim's Terminus with feeding frenzy. Who needs to waste an exotic slot when you already have a weapon that does the same job, and then some. Now their 3rd friend has ridiculously good luck and gets a god-roll Grasp of Malok on his first run of the Omnigul. When he gets back to the Tower, he decides an engram and gets Bad Juju. "Oh yeah, new exotic!" But the stats on Bad Juju are worse than Grasp of Malok, and he's already got 100% Intellect.
As it stands in the game now, there are very few exotics worth trading a legendary equivalent for. The Last Word has lost any reason to be hip-fired anymore, Suros feels like an overshined legendary gunsmith order, Tlauloc feels like a poor man's Mida Multitool, which is one of the few surviving exotics, almost every heavy machine gun being used is Qullim's Terminus, Thorn shoots tickle darts that do no damage and last about the time it takes to blink, Touch of Malice is literally only used on Oryx and Sisters, I could go on but I think I've made my point. Most of the current Exotics in this game don't really feel 'Exotic' anymore. They just feel like workhorses with a different paint job, and are often times outclassed by other legendaries, or their class it so rigid that there are better options for almost every single activity. (Looking at you Dreg's Promise) Exotics are becoming nothing more than novelty items, things to be flaunted, then switched out or used as a joke. I, for one, can no longer stand the abuse and mistreatment of Exotics any longer, but you can help for just pennies a day. Call 1(800)-555-EXOTIC to cast your vote on whether we should keep exotics on our level, or elevate them to their previous godhood, or just select a choice above.

  • First off, Exotics were meant to be for the best of the best, but obviously, hat never happened either. Most of the best exotics at release were RNG based. TLW, Ice Breaker, Red Death, SUROS, the weapons you say were the Meta back then, were all RNG based. Not the best of the best players got them, randoms got them! In some peoples' case, Thorn is different. I did it when the cap was 30. It was actually earned back then. Why they never updated the bounty with appropriate levels, I'll never know. Invective, Juju, the old bounties, I also did from scratch during that time. THOSE exotics were earned and for the best of the best. At the time. It strikes me as odd in your "Exotics are obsolete" point that you say most probably got their exotics from mundane things, but if you played Year 1, did those bounties, hat wasn't the case. My first exotic was MIDA, and I got it in VoG for beating Atheon, the third week VoG was even out. You even say "Wow, this gun shoots poison!" As if people who did earn Thorn from that bounty achieved it in a mundane way. Now that's just a load of horse sh*t. I also disagree with your point that they had "previous godhood"; a lot of these exotics were just trash from the start! Sure, maybe it's wasteful, or inappropriate for them to be exotics in that case, but some people still use them. Your weapon is only as good as you are with it. Some people are gods with NLB, others are absolute garbage. Some people are great with MIDA, some people, regardless o the meta, are still trash with it. A weapon doesn't measure your skill, but the reason hese weapons got nerfed was because at some point the weapons DID measure skill, not how they were used. Vex was ridiculous, living in SUROS hell was ridiculous, and TLW Thorn hell was absolutely ridiculous, that coming from somone who was a part of and played against and in every meta. I used Thorn so much when I first got it, that almost a year later it is STILL the "favorite weapon" for Crucible in my statistics page. That's all I have to say about that. People are entitled to their own opinions. I jus happen to disagree with yours. (Which is part of my opinion)

    • Exotics can't be god tier weapons and better than any other legendary weapon. Well not in Crucible, anyway. I think that Exotics, should be exotics, because of their exotic perks. If they was just better than any other legendary because they're OP, then the crucible would be a mess.....

Aye, i felt the same way before I stopped playing. Everything about this game has been flat lined. It is boring. Games like overwatch that have unique characters really stand out when put against the bland and boring destiny. I can only imagine in Destiny 2 we will probably have another hive raid, more old nerfed exotics that nobody wants anymore, and raid legendaries no one wants again.

          • The problem I see is nerfing weapons leads to more nerfing. In my opinion exotics shouldn't be pvp based but rather pve as that then gives them that over powering feel without aggravating the pvp side of the game. Competitive multiplayer needs to be even and fair caught, exotics have somewhat taken that away and you fix it by giving an exotic only playlist or nerfing them on the pvp side only (bungie nerfs them entirely which ruins the pve fun you could get out of these weapons). To me exotics are supposed to be these legendary weapons that were special made to do stuff original guns couldn't do, I think bungie just needs to keep pvp and pve seperate when it comes to these guns and their uses for them. I don't mind an exotic being overpowered or stronger cuz they're supposed to, I think they've lost their meaning only cuz of their use in pvp which again, is "supposed" to be even fought which exotics ruin that aspect and is why destiny in its current state will never be a serious competitive shooter. Exotics will keep going down until their excluded from pvp cuz you'll continuously see them nerfing new and old exotic tier weapons and as I said, nerfing only leads to more nerfing which I find unhealthy for a game.

          • In crucible, i rarely use exotics. And if i do use one, its usually a heavy: Truth or Thunderlord. I used to love Hawkmoon but my Eyesluna out-performs it. I used to love Plan C, but my Thesan FR4 out-performs it. Exotics aren't very sexy anymore. This is true.

          • I just use exotics because they're fun to use. I don't really care about what perks they have, the stability, range, length, with, dank memeage, etc. since I find these weapons fun to use. However, there's one issue with that. Exotics shouldn't be used for fun. They should be used because they are powerful and better than that Arminius-D with Counterbalance and Perfect Balance. Bungie has taken (topkek) the Exotic-ness out of Exotics. TL/DR: Give us Exotics or we blow the ship.

Agreed. On a side note, your post inspired me to look up gameplay of the pre-nerf Vex, and holy shit. Thank god they nerfed that. Lmao. I'm a little upset I took that long destiny break now. I missed a good time.

              • Exotics need to be difference makers, not decorative/cosmetic armor. Very few exotics are really more than decorations. Sure their attack does something nifty that other weapon's don't do, but they aren't real DIFFERENCE-MAKERS. The exotics are so niche, you feel like you need to carry 3-4 of them to make it through different phases of a strike, and with the ammo penalty for switching weapons of the same category, who really does that? It's just easier to coordinate with your fireteam members- which is likely what they want you to do. Unfortunately, not everyone has 3/6 man fireteams to do activities with. Contrary to what people though tin Y1, there isn't a problem with having really powerful exotics like Icebreaker and G-horn. The problem is there aren't MORE of them. Just imagine if Truth's damage output matched G-horn's, but it did not have the wolfpack rounds? Now we have choices. Sure, the wolfpack rounds give more constant DPS vs a one time BOOM from a Truth warhead, but the truth has a much bigger blast radius, meaning it could potentially outdue G-horn in crowd control in some situations. Or, imagine if we had an exotic that left behind in random patterns inside its blast radius 8-12 grenades of the same kind you have equipped. Just think of how effective/diverse and versatile that weapon could be! Suppression grenades from a Defender would wreak havoc on your enemies in PVE OR PVP; Scatter grenades would swarm any survivors of the initial explosion. Solar grenades pared with sunbreaker gauntlets for the warlock would mean a boss would take MAJOR DPS! Now, all of a sudden, we have several top-tier weapons and nobody is forced to have a G-horn... The answer is never to nerf our favorite weapons. The answer is to buff all other weapons so that we have a larger number of GOOD weapons to use. None of the weapons in Y2 are really incredibly fun to use like Icebreaker, B-hammer, Fatebringer, or G-horn were in Y1. And its the community's fault we don't have those weapons anymore.

Sidearms : Any good rolled legendary ( no exotic) Pulse : Hawksaw / grasp / Suros PDX ( no exotic) There are far too many legendaries that outshine their exotic counterparts.

                • Exotics should be above all else. Why else are you only able to equip one piece at a time? With that said, the ONLY way they can truly stay exotic, is to not allow them into all PVP playlists. So to fix all the bitching is to simply have a "No Exotic Playlist" along with anything on a competitive level like iron banner or trials simply not allow exotics to be equipped. Easy peasy fix. I'm really hoping Destiny 2 has something like this.

They should be game changing PvE items that give you new and interesting ways to play, but Crucible should be all ledgendary relighing on skill more so then weapon or armor choice. If anything let Mayham include exotics..
