If Bungie had made Destiny for only current Gen consoles back in 2013 there would be no issue now but they didn't. They made Destiny for last gen and released DLC for them as well.
Bungie should have continued support for last gen right up until Destiny 1 ended in it's entirety because what they have done now is tell last gen players "You want to continue the story? Buy our game all over again and drop £300+ on a new console whilst you're at it."
If Bungie intended to drop support for last gen during Destiny 1's life cycle they should have given fair warning to players before they purchased Destiny. They didn't because they wanted to squeeze as much money out of players as possible.

To battle this idea I would agree that they wouldn't have this issue, but more people will be inclined to upgrade to a new system now rather than 3 years ago when Destiny was showcased at E3. I think it was a smart move to make the game compatible with last gen. Did it hurt the gameplay? Probably. Does it look gorgeous on next Gen? Hands down, but having that other 10% of player base that will be making the transfer in September to have bought and played the game was a smart move

Destiny 2 isn't far off. I believe Bungie would have made more money if they made this DLC last gen compatible, they would sell more DLC and players would be more understanding if they dropped last gen support when they announce Destiny 2. I fail to see how throwing your last gen fan-base under the bus at the very end of Destiny 1's life cycle especially since every other DLC was compatible beforehand is a smart move.
