Focused Fire, how does it affect weapons? How will it benefit you or hinder you? And overall will it make your weapon more powerful?
- Focused Fire reduces the fire rate when you aim down sights while also increasing the damage.
Test #1 [b]SUROS Regime[/b]
Default it fires at [b]450rpm and deals 46 body damage[/b] to lvl 1 enemies.
With focused fire active it fires at [b]300rpm and deals 61 body damage[/b] to the enemies.
300/450 = 0.66667 which means that with focused fire it will shot at 2/3s (66.67%) of its original speed. This of course means it will shot 1/3 (33.34%) slower.
61/ 46 = 1.3261 which means it dealt 132.6% of its original damage; we can round this up to 4/3 (133.34%). This means it dealt 1/3 (33.34%) more damage.
(Note that the 61 damage could actually be anything from 60.6 to 61.4 and the same thing goes for the 46)
Test #2 Arminius-d
It at default fire at [b]900rpm and deals 28 damage[/b]
With focused fire it fires at [b]600 rpm and deals 37 damage[/b]
Which gives us the same results.
600/900 = 0.66667
37/28 = 1.322
(Note that the 37 damage could actually be anything from 36.6 to 37.4 and the same thing goes for the 28)
Now that we have established that [b]focused fire reduces your fire rate by minus 33.34% or 1/3 and increases your damage by plus 1/3[/b] lets look and consider it for a second. You would think that by adding the same percent of damage as you reduced the rate of fire you would not have changed the damage per second. Really [b]these changes actually do create a DPS loss[/b]. This is because the reduction to fire rate is proportionally greater. For example if you had a weapon that shot at 100rpm and dealt 100damage per shot and you applied focused fire it would shot at 66.67rpm and deal 133.34 damage. Which of the changes is more significant? Well 66.67/100 = 0.6667 and 100 /133.34 = 0.75. This means that by reducing by 1/3 you lose 1/3 of your effectiveness, but by adding 1/3 you only get ¼(25%) more effectiveness. To show that you loss DPS:
100rpm x 100damage = 10000DPM = 166.667DPS,
66.67rpm x 133.34damage = 8888.889DPM = 148.148DPS
If you do want more rate of fire but don’t want to loss DPS, I have a simple solution. Rather than adding a percentage instead use a multiplier. For example to obtain 1/3 less rate of fire you use 1.5x as your multiplier: 100rpm/1.5 = 66.667, 100damage x 1.5 = 150. To show that there is NO DPS loss:
100rpm x 100damage = 10000DPM = 166.667DPS,
66.667rpm x 150damage = 10000DPM = 166.667DPS
Bungie does not necessarily need to implement this since there is other factors that make focused fire balanced.
So what are the benefits and hindrances? With focused fire you get the usual benefits that come with a slower fire rate including more controllable recoil, easier target tracking, and greater accuracy as well as a ton of damage in a single magazine. With it you will be able to fire much longer than usual which can some times confuse your enemies. Of course a slower fire rate will also punish you more for missing shots and is not usually preferable in close quarters, although you can hipfire up close to get the faster fire rate.
[b]Note![/b] on the medium fire rate auto rifles it will decrease the fire rate 40% instead of 33.3% due to frame rounding but you will still only get the 33.3% damage bonus.
Overall focused fire can be a good perk for some weapons but also not so excellent on others, I would recommend it for the highest fire rate kind,.
