*Sound seemed to distort outside of Mortar's house a moment. The door was open, but there was nothing there. Nothing, that is, until a spark ignited in the center of the room, and a vertical oval slowly following. Inside the oval was a hazy forest, trees rotting and some ruins somewhat farther back. This was a portal. Mortar stepped through it with ease, then pointed a metal rod at the portal. The portal was getting absorbed by the rod. After that, Mortar sits down, seemingly working on something in a journal while a winged cat weaved between his legs*
Alright, let's see here... day... what day is it? It's June, I know that.
It's June 20th.
*The cat just talked, and Mortar seemed to treat it like a normal thing*
Thanks Mion.
No problem.
June 20th: I have been working on a new way to bring people back...
You have? You've brought them back to the dead before, and now it's easy because everyone that prevented you is gone.
Let me finish. I have been working on a new way to bring people back from the dead with as little side effects as possible. I was successful with bringing back one person, but he died an hour later. Wait, I have a few test subjects!
*Mortar grins at Mion*
Wait, Me? No, no, no. I'm a damn animal of prey, I am a fascination to biologists!
Who told you that?
The owner of the Smithsonian.
Fine, I'll give you that.
But I'm not gonna use you. I have a few enemies in that place I went to, so I'm gonna use them.

Kross peaks his head out from the door leading to the basement "Is he gone?"
-
Cadmael? Yeah, he left. Why?
-
"Good, good." Kross exits the door way and enters the room where you are "I'm hiding."
-
Why? Playing hide and seek with the boy? *Mortar chuckles at his crappy joke*
-
"No no no no. Of course not. Much to immature." He looks around "Should really lock your Door. What are you doing in here?"
-
Oh, I'm trying to find a new way to bring people back from the dead
-
"Why?"
-
Because I want to see my parents again, and because I want to help others
-
"You're going mad."
-
I'm afraid so. I dunno, I guess almost dying triggered something in me
-
"You're fine though."
-
Yeah... I don't know, I'm just determined again. I feel useful now, and I plan to help others. I don't care how, but I will.
-
"Determined? To help? You cannot push it Mortar. You know that."
-
I do, okay? I know that this could cause a problem, and yet I still do it. Why? Because I'm dedicated to helping others. Call me mad, but one of these days, you will not be able to come back normally, and you'll wish that I did this.
-
"No i wouldn't." Kross looks away "If I were able to die an honorable death, and then your brought me back, why I'd be uninterested in living."
-
But if you died by something so trivial... I apologize. Being immortal, I miss mortals that have come and gone while I was still young. I was unable to compute how these people were frail, and how they lasted so shortly.
-
"Life isn't a game Mortar. It's not something you can give away as you please.
-
I'm not saying it is. Mion, tell him what you told me. Fine. Mortar said that the world would make out better if some of the greatest heroes never died.
-
Kross looks at you "You can't. You wouldn't!"
-
I wish I couldn't. But I feel like this will be best. Humanity is killing themselves, I can't just stand here. Bombings, shootings, terrorists, 9/11.
-
"You're turning into one of them. One of those Aethers or Exiled who wanted to stop it!"
-
No, the Exiled wanted to shield all the humans. I don't want to save all of the humans, just the important ones. *Mortar looks at you with baggy eyes and a face saying "please stop me"*
-
"I won't let you do this. You can't, you shouldn't. And I simply cannot let you."
-
And what will you do? I've beaten you before, I can do it again and again until you wished I made this machine
-
"Someone's got to stop you."
