It has a learning curve because it demands patience and a unique playstyle, which results in most people abandoning it right away. But if you figure it out, it's very good and very rewarding to use.

This. Know shots to kill by reading the health bar. Aim for the head and make sure every shot is lined up before firing. It'll feel like you're not firing fast enough but you only really need 2-3 good shots. There's also different tricks depending on the option perk you can go for s speedy build to dodge or one that will make sure you will regularly shoot and hit first.
