The taken are one of my favorite enemies. I have written about them before, about how well they personify something that is unreal and drained of its essence. I love patrolling Mars and stumbling upon Taken "corruption" it is a filth I can vanquish, and feel good doing so. Sniping the heads of those phalanx is the best. More than anything, the Taken represent the truth that everything that is fake represents a shattered image of what is real. Every Taken enemy was once a living breathing entity. It was real once, but was lost. I see many parrallels between the Taken and real life. Destiny is good at that: creating imagery that reminds us of something that is real. It is the mark of real art when something imaginary has the power to draw meaning from what is real.
The moon landings represent a very real "fakery", and to me share many parallels with the Taken. For example, the unmanned surveyor 3 probe supposedly landed on the moon in 1967. It purportedly took several pictures of the lunar surface. Every picture, like this one, showed a very rocky surface. In 1969 it was claimed that astronauts visited the probe during the Apollo 12 mission. But this picture demonstrates beyond a doubt that these "missions" were fake, just like the Taken: in the picture of the astronaut standing beside Surveyor 3 there are almost NO rocks! Who cleaned up the rocks? The movie studio crew?
While some may not see how this relates to Destiny, to me it shows that once something is faked it is robbed of its essence and "Taken" to serve some someone else's purpose. Space travel (at least the idea of it) is something good and full of life. If traveling the stars is possible on the Flat Earth, it is one of the highest goals to which man can aspire. But like the Taken (once creatures with a will and life of their own) space travel has been "Taken" from us and used as a tool of political propaganda. Like Oryx, NASA controls the very ideas that could define space travel and make it great.
