People aren't denying that Destiny has a lot of story. The ire has always come from the fact that very little of it is presented in the game. Names are thrown out via exposition in year one and a situation was presented in year two with Oryx.
Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Oblivion, and Skyrim have robust entries that provide enjoyable backstories and lore. That stuff enhances the Role Playing experience but there's enough story in those games to let you know things are happening.
With Destiny it always felt like the grimoire cards were some sort of pardon from having to include that material via cinematics.
