I guess youre right
But with a removal of SBMM, yes it will be connection based, yes matches will be more random, yes there is equal chance to shit on or get shat on or even be equal but i dont necessarily agree with that setup. Its inconsistent.
Speaking from a personal viewpoint i dont want to go into a Crucible where its too easy to kill enemies. Likewise playing against players too high above me is not fun either. So SBMM is necessary to introduce these boundaries.
The problem comes in with cases like OP's where he cant play comfortably with his friends.
Perhaps there should be social lobbies for such instances? After all not every fireteam will have such huge differences between their individual skills, and not every fireteam will want casual games.
We just need more options in the Crucible tbh when it comes to matchmaking.

I'm not talking complete removal, I should make that clear, I want it put back to Y1. With the SBMM in year one though it was connection based while searching, and then it split the teams based on skill, while in year two it goes skill based while searching, and then it seems like it barely tries to split them based on skill. So while SBMM did exist in year one, it was a different (and better) kind
We just need more options in the Crucible tbh when it comes to matchmaking.
This is what it all boils down to, I have connection-based, connection+skill-based, and skill-based in Halo 5, so I can make my matches whatever I want, casual or sweaty. Destiny currently has "you can wait for 10 minutes for a Salvage game and then sweat your heart out for 10 minutes, you have no say in this" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
