Like seriously.... Anytime one of my friends is in a bad mood, I'll just start off by saying "hi" and either, they won't respond or they'll say they hate everyone/everything. So obviously I just ask what's wrong.
As soon as I say that, they treat me like I killed someone and that I'm a horrible person now. Like wtf!?
They could just say, "nah, I don't wanna talk about it", but no. All of a sudden I'm a criminal and it's like, 'well now I feel bad for asking' and if I say sorry, it somehow makes it worse.
They weren't originally mad at me, I didn't cause them to be upset, but they are now.

People can be...complicated, especially when in an emotionally unstable or vulnerable state. Lashing out like that is usually a "knee-jerk" sort of reaction to avoid further harm or complication. Usually a well-established friendship and cautious approach can greatly reduce the risk of that sort of thing, but I said, people can be complicated. If you wish to appeal, apologize for coming off as intrusive and express that you only wished to know what was bothering them in hopes that you could provide some level of assistance. This should diffuse the hostility and create a more neutral ground. However, if you don't feel like you should apologize, and I can understand that stance, simply avoid the situation until your friend feels comfortable enough to be the one to approach you about the issue. Your call, either path is acceptable. Or if you have another idea in mind, go for that. These are just two potential methods that I happened to think of.

If they reply with something like "I hate everyone", you need new friends. Over emotional people are the worst.

Your friends are weird

Just say something like... "Oh my good friend, I sense that you seem upset. I would like to ask what is wrong with you, because I care. Please respect that and know that my intentions are good, so don't bite my -blam!-ing head off just for asking or use me as an emotional punching bag ok!!!"

I stop talking to people like that. Either keep the drama to yourself or allow me to help. If you can't do one of the two, you're causing me stress and that's not the kind of people I want in my life.
