Fireteam Ashen(13): The Chamber of Night[1]
Looking for a different chapter? Here's the Master Post.
Night fell on the landscape around them as Joden and Cosmo made the short trek to the ship. Once their Ghosts transmatted them inside, Joden fired up the engines and set a course for the City. "How long did it take for you to become a Bladedancer?" Cosmo asked. "Oh, not too long." Joden shrugged, "probably a little bit longer than it took for you. In fact, I-" "Joden." A somewhat robotic voice interrupted. "What is it, Slice?" The form of a Ghost appeared and hovered close to Joden's head. "I've just received an urgent transmission." Slice explained, "It's incoming on all channels... from the Speaker..." "Open the channel." Joden commanded." "Nothing is more important now." The Speaker's voice said over the comms, "We believe the Hive are engaged in a ritual that is draining the Traveler of its Light. Whatever power they wield must be understood... and destroyed." Joden glanced at Cosmo quickly before focusing his attention on the ship's controls. "Change of plans," Joden said, his expression grim, "We're going to the Moon." They landed at the base of the Hellmouth. "Slice, this ritual could be happening in any one of their thousand chambers. Which way to we go?" "I'm detecting a faint trace of recent Guardian activity through the Circle of Bones. Let's get down there and see if we can find anything." "Sound like a plan." Joden answered, and the two Guardians took off at a run. / A lone Hunter clutching a heavy machine gun stood on a high ledge, surveying the Temple of Crota. "Omicron, I need a scan." "On it." The voice answered. A moment later, it spoke again. "A Guardian's been through here recently, cut through a lot of Hive too. The problem is that more Hive have flooded the chamber since then. You're not just going to be able to walk in there, Phantom." The Hunter smiled under his helmet. "Never been a problem for me before." A moment later, a jumpship cut through the sky overhead, dropping another Guardian. Avesk materialized and drew the revolver strapped to his hip. The Hunter up ahead only glanced back and nodded a quick greeting before jumping off of the ledge and down into the waiting clutches of the Hive. Avesk shrugged as he followed suit. "No time for, talk I guess." The two veteran Hunters cut a path through the Hive, delving deeper and deeper into the Hive fortress world. Grenades exploded and Wizards shrieked. Eventually the two stumbled upon a strange arrowhead-shaped device. Phantom extended his hand and his Ghost glided over and scanned the object. "It's a Hive Seeder," Omicron confirmed, "If we don't finish this, there'll be more of these hitting home." Phantom nodded. "Let's finish this then." / Patriot walked through the shattered some of a biosphere, with Validus in tow. He frowned beneath his crested helmet. "The Moon held a lot of promise back in the Golden Age. If you could colonize the moon, then that spoke volumes about what else you could accomplish. Now, it's just a forgotten memory." He exited through another hole in the wall. "There," Patriot spoke, "that's a Hive Entrance. I'm betting that we can follow that passage to the Hive Ritual." The two ran down the small slope to the Hive doorway, guarded by two Knights. Validus jumped into the air and activated his Super, diving down and destroying them both in the Arc shockwave. The two Titans stepped over the stone threshold and into a Hive tunnel. They followed the winding path downwards, surrounded by cocoons. "Patriot, what are these?" Validus asked as the sounds of chittering and scratching could be heard within. "If I were to guess, I'd say those are unborn Hive. I'm sure those will eventually break open to reveal a Thrall inside. We'd best not disturb them." Patriot answered. Validus couldn't agree more. It wasn't long until the cramped cave opened up into a large cavern, filled with elaborate and gothic-style architecture. The symbol of the Hive was engraved on the walls. "Now this is what I'm talking about." Patriot said. "I'm sure the chamber isn't too far from here." In the center of the room was a massive crystal chandelier. Here, the path split. To the left was a cavern that led to a large rounded tunnel, with massive cables traveling into it. Straight ahead was another large doorway, guarded by a ton of Hive. "Which way, Patriot?" Validus asked. The Exo thought for a second before answering. "Straight seems like the best bet. It's more heavily guarded." So straight they went. As they neared the doorway, the air above them split, and a Hive Tombship cut into the space. Thrall jumped out from behind rocks, Acoyltes, Knights, and Wizards dropped from the ship, and the strange Hive mechanism placed in the air opened and glowed with an intense purple light. It began to fire homing blasts of Hive magic at the two Titans. / Joden and Cosmo entered a large, circular room, with a massive chain set in the center. In the far side of the room was an Ogre. It roared and fired its massive eye beam at them. Joden grabbed Cosmo and dragged him behind cover. He raised his finger to his lips before vanishing. The Ogre grunted, confused before screaming a moment later. Joden reappeared on the Ogre's bask and plunged his knife into the Hive's bulbous face. The Ogre shrieked as the knife popped the tumors and Hive flesh splattered the floors. It reared back and screamed as Joden pushed his knife deeper. A moment later, the Ogre was dead and it's body disintegrated into ash. Joden stood and dusted off his hands. "Well, that's that." He said, "Let's keep moving." They continued down through dark corridors, which eventually opened up into a massive space. The entire area was lit with a gray light and Hive bridges spanned the chasm. However, they followed the bridge to the left. As they did, a massive roar filled the cavern. "I don't even want to know what they're keeping down there." Joden commented. They traveled down a few sets of stairs before stepping through a doorway, finally arriving at the Circle of Bones. "Slice?" Joden asked. "Scanning." The female Ghost said as she pulsed with Light. "They went left," Slice said and she disappeared.
Click here for the next chapter
