You aren't the only one. And it's actually nice to find common company. Kind of rare on this forum now.
I might consider reading the flashcards if there was something in the game that actually stirred up a bit of interest in me. People, locations, or concepts that can be learned about in game just enough to know they have a real impact on what's going on so that I have a reason and true desire to go look for more information.
An off hand name toss, expecting me to believe something is important without question, or stating the obvious/describing events with obvious outcomes just don't cut it in terms of making me want to learn more. If you want me to look deeper into someone, show me that they're a character, not just a plot device. If there's an important event I should know about, don't just reference it, give me a clear link to the ongoing impact it's had so that I have a place to start looking for information.
It's a lot like the character Kup, from transformers.
I like Kup, but his random, non-specific information was used as humor. Just because he dropped the names of important events/people doesn't make them significant, so there's no reason look into them any further.
Sure, I could try to look into why there were so many casualties in one of the battles he mentioned, or how inverting polarities of a tractor beam was the solution to something significant in winning the battle; and I could look up what a petro-rabbit is, but there's no reason to. None of it is significant to the actual story.
I've always compared this game to a big action movie. You walk in, see some fighting, and think it's cool at first. But it's just a continuous battle with no real motivation or development. Then after you've walked out of the theater, a guy hands you a stack of flashcards and claims they hold the "deep" story that couldn't be seen in the movie. Then when you look at them, the cards are just a series of fragmented thoughts and vague descriptions with enough open ends to make people want real answers and give an easy way to make a sequel out of anything.
Man, that was long. I need to stop getting on here when I'm tired. Tend to ramble a bit.
