Okay I have a theory, and this is, like [b][i]SERIOUSLY[/i][/b] outlandish, but hear me out.
So, they mentioned that it started when a team went to the Dust Palace on Mars, right? Well, everyone remember that secret room? If my theory is correct, that's not just any room.
That place had a SIVA cluster in there, didn't it? And if I'm not mistaken, didn't Clovis Bray develop SIVA? And if that's right, it only supports my claim even further.
I think that these mites are various types of SIVA. Much more tame versions of SIVA. And I think this is evidence of how quickly SIVA spreads, and how big a threat it is.

When you activate a SIVA cluster in the room under the Dustpalace it gives of the same animated swarm but red. Can confirm.

I went into that room a few days before this Owl Sector stuff kicked up. I don't have any of the viruses. It's a cool theory but unfortunately not reality.

I don't think it ACTUALLY came from the room. If you go to the Dust Palace right now, it likely won't do anything. If it was simply just lore, it would be more plausible.

Well, I think it was definitely a coincidence but I got brilliance 3.2 from running Dust Palace strike. It's killing me not knowing what's going on!

Yup, Taken War/Weekly Heroic Strike playlist. Psion Flayers strike. The room where the heavy sometimes spawns in with the flame jets. Strangely, I just checked recent activities and it doesn't have any record of me doing it. I swear I did however. The other two people in my match-made fireteam did also have the Brilliance thing before we started. That's about all the info off the top of my head. If you have any questions unanswered I can see what I can do. :D

So your fireteam members did have it?

I believe so, I had no idea what it was or how to get it at the time. But I received it while doing the strike with them.

So, have you seen people get it alone?

Well, to tell you the truth, tonight has been the first time I've been able to get on since tuesday. However, another post I read said that you can get it from picking up an infected player's orb, and killing one in the crucible. I may have picked up an orb since they were pretty good about super use, but I couldn't say for sure. As for a quick answer to your question, no, I have not seen people get it alone, but I have no evidence for or against that idea.

Nice, so the few guardians thats glitched their way into that room and got the ghost are the ones that started spreading the infection? They could have purposefully made that possible and showed some people how to do it. It could have been a nice setup

That sounds solid. Though, if it were easier, it would be better. It's pretty damn obscure as to how to get in. Which is why I think that we'll learn what it is when the RoI actually comes out. After all, the place isn't supposed to be accessed yet.

yeah but look how quickly people posted exactly how to do it on youtube ; within the hour ! afterwards they sit back and watch it spread in crucible where everyone shoots and stab and share balls with each other without preservatives
