I'm away from home. How do I get all these "buffs" like Fortitude 3.1 and stuff?

Supposedly you get them once you're infected, from the way people are talking you can get 5 of them. Powers and orbs of light seem to be the way its transmitted, you'll know when you have these glowy things around your head.
