Its just the pre dlc public event, as we had with all the dlc. But now its a pvp event and not a pve event. it probably will unlock some sort of ingame stuff like the ether chests did with the HoW events. Just wait and see

I helped my friend do few missions and got infected. So pvp too.

It's not just pvp it spreads to pve as well.
