I had this thought after reading the Owl Sector reports. Could these infections be the prelude to the Last City's fall? At the very least a major catastrophe for the City? I say that because when The Taken King released we saw a major blow to the Awoken in the confrontation with Oryx. Also we see a new social space opening up in Felwinter's Peak. Could that mean something happening to the Tower? If this seems far-fetched I understand, but it was the feeling I was getting out of reading all the Owl Sector reports.
