I know why this generation is so messed up! It's because our teachers allow us to be too lazy!
We're entitled because we're given such easy, monkey work, and not expected to do much critical thinking. Ideally, we should work to a point that you cannot graduate highschool without full comprehension of tensor calculus and group theory.
It only makes sense that we'll be smarter if we take what is to be expected of graduate students, and expect highschool students to do it instead. Think of how far ahead our graduate students will be!

American children are actually assigned anywhere from 2-5x more homework than any other country, even though other countries still outperform us in standardized testing. This means a lot of time spent cooped up inside studying, sending unengaging texts to friends between multiplication tables and book reports instead of going out and actually socializing and interacting with other human beings. That's why your generation is so messed up. We impose isolation on our children through a cold and oppressive education system that forces children to focus solely on themselves because they are not allowed adequate time to learn how to care about anyone else. We shouldn't be surprised then that children become all about "me" and struggle to forge meaningful connections or display empathy. When the opportunity is given to interact interpersonally children have no idea how to handle it. This is why I boot my kid out of the house whenever I can. Not because I don't love her or wish she would stay home with us, but because she needs to forge connections outside of her parents and learn how to coincide with a wide variety of people, seeing things from a wide variety of viewpoints.

If people can't motivate themselves to not be lazy there is a problem no teacher can fix.

Please explain. Are you a fellow Mensa member who is bored with education? Or are you complaining because your Trig homework took longer than it takes to eat a burrito?

*Parent is a teacher* Huh.

Public education is a government program. You know how those tend to work out.

I disagree with so much in this statement. First of all, with the public school system, it is the state that designs the curriculum, not the teachers. In many places the teachers are held back from teaching because of politics and parents who are more interested in seeing little Billy pass than learn something. Trust me, teachers want to teach. Second, while a more challenging curriculum would be nice, we have to be careful how it is implemented. School is a K-12 experience with everything build on itself. A new curriculum should be introduced at the Kindergarten level and have students work their way through it. If you just change everything in an instant, then you could screw up the current generation that is currently in school.

Critical thinking? Sure! Tensor Calculus? Definitely not.
-
Agreed. Don't give kids 3 hours worth of homework, give them homework that takes them 3 hours because it's a process to think through and strengthening to the mind. Not this monotonous bullshit we get today.

I can fix this problem. STOP PAYING ATHLETES MILLIONS AND GIVE TEACHERS ENOUGH MONEY TO SUPPORT THEMSELVES. It's that simple. If we can incentivise teachers, it's a win win. My grandma was a teacher and now subs. She says she does not and will not force students to do work because she isn't payed enough to do that. She has been hurt 3 times as a teacher including broken shoulder, broken leg, and broken arm and nearly died last year. Ya think she needs more money? I do too.

My History teacher said that the alternative choice that the District could have chosen for our textbooks is now used in high schools. Smh.
-
It got this way because parents complained their kids had too much work. Kids get so much time off now. The standards are being lowered too much.

Tis the state not the teacher

Edited by PhreshBrotha: 9/21/2016 5:10:40 PMWell that actually goes back to the parents. A lot of parents complain to the school and the teachers about their children having not being able to do the work. (I'm excluding people with real learning disabilities of course) A lot of teachers would love to have students learn at their full potential, but between politics and parents, it's next to impossible. Unless you enroll in a private school but even that isn't a garanteed ticket to a great education. Edit: Also, schools need to add more classes on lifeskills and make Home Economics a required course. You'd be surprised how many Straight A students don't know how to use a Washer/Dryer or stove after moving out for college.

Maybe they should learn the fundamentals of Hegelian metaphysics too. Since they're already doing college level Physics and Maths, they should do college level everything.

We dont agree on much on here. But i agree on this. My son is 12 and the way he is being taught math and English is astoundingly stupid. History is a joke, done had a conversation with principal and superintendent. Long story short, the supplied answers on a test was bashing the Constitution and other things.

It starts at home not with teachers

No, typically it's the parents fault. When their kid is skipping class or doesnt give a ****, it's the parents or kids fault. When I was in the 9th grade a little over 10yrs ago we had some 20 yr old in their who didn't care guess what, he got kicked out :(
