yeah I've noticed if you smack the mountain on the way down there's a good chance of surviving

Actually, back in year one I found out that if you land on an angle, you have a higher chance of living than if you hit flat ground. Also there are moments where you will hit the ground at really weird angles and you will die from something where you would normally survive.
