“Agh,” Vera grunted. “In case you---shit---hadn’t noticed, Cass, I’m a little busy here,” Vera huffed as she traded blows with the tiring Captain.
“I have to do everything,” I muttered. “Solm, cover me!” I called as I ran out of cover and leaped into the air towards the rising skiff. Solm charged with their fusion rifle whining as I caught the edge of skiff. I flipped myself up into its hangar and gave the solitary Dreg inside a present from my shotgun. It fell, ether streaming into the air. I felt the Light bloom within me. Roll with it. I exhaled and jumped, pulling the Light inside of me to my right hand.
My Nova Bomb impacted right behind the cockpit door and erupted into a howling vortex which shredded the skiff from the inside. I slipped out the way I entered as the skiff exploded behind me.
To my dismay I found that the skiff had risen a couple hundred meters before my Nova Bomb ended its flight prematurely. Apparently the pilot was attempting to flee. This was not the ideal situation for me, as I found myself in free fall.
I tried to slow my plummet with my Glide, but my momentum was too great. And unfortunately that left me falling at non-lethal speeds. This is going to hurt, I thought, right before smashing into the ground.
I felt my legs break and my right hand fracture, and the shards from my rib tore through my stomach lining instantly, spilling acid into the rest of my body. The pain was… unimaginable. I screamed.
“Cassandra!” I heard the strain and panic in Solm’s voice as they sprinted to me.
“Oh come on,” Vera said. “She’s not even dead!” Vera was sitting on top of the Captain’s dead body, her blade protruding from its spine. I was twitching. At least my voice was too raw to continue screaming. “Guys!” Vera called. “There are still Fallen to kill. Just shoot her in the head or something and then her Ghost will revive her, good as new.”
Solm remained silent, bent over me.
“-blam!-ing fine, I’ll do it by myself,” Vera said. She leveled the Ace of Hearts and blew a Dreg’s head off. Suddenly, the Heart on its side became suffused with a golden glow. The light leapt from Vera’s gun to my body and I was jerked into the air. Solm jumped back, alarmed.
Just as I had felt my bones break, I now felt them mend. I landed on my feet, feeling as if I had just awoken from a long and peaceful sleep. I was refreshed.
“Huh,” I said, looking down at my blissfully intact body.
“Yeah,” Vera mused. “Would ya look at that.”
SKZZT! There was a flash of light as a wire rifle round pierced my chest and blood spewed out of my new wound. “Oh for the love of---” I choked out as the blood spilled from my mouth into my helmet.
“Seriously?!” Vera exclaimed. “Seriously!??” She fired a single shot and the Vandal sniper screeched and died. Once more the golden light filled my body with warmth and I was made whole. For the second time in as many seconds it seemed. The blood was even cleared from my visor. We all looked around for more Fallen, but our radars were still and the world was silent.
I was blindsided as Solm wrapped me in a massive hug. I pretended to struggle against it. “Stop it!” I laughed. Okay, I’ll be honest. It was more of a giggle.
<Shouting to someone else in the room, “Are you happy, Vera? Now get out of my room!>
“I’m fine!” I said. Solm released me.
“Good,” they replied. “Nice Nova Bomb. That looked awesome.”
“Thanks,” I smiled.
I turned to Vera. “And thanks to you. For the healing and for not shooting me in the head,” I said, extending my hand.
Vera crossed her arms. “Oh, so Solm gets a hug and I get a handshake?”
I rolled my eyes and wrapped my arms around the slim Hunter’s frame. Vera squirmed her way out of my embrace after a couple seconds. “Okay there tiger,” she said. “Let’s not get all touchy-feely here.” I punched her shoulder in reply.
The three of us surveyed the destruction we had wrought. We clasped hands and smiled beneath our helmets.
“Alright then,” I said. “We have a job to do.”
