Ummm. No.
Hillary is just your common, garden-variety asshole.. Trump is the kind of guy who would have people show up on your doorstep at 3AM....or start following you around....because he didn't like what you said about him.
Ideally though.....Democracy and our system of government should function in the way you suggest. That its checks and balances act to prevent one person from having too much power....and to prevent a President from acting as a dictator. In 1974 it did. The Republican party stepped up, joined with Democrats and pushed Nixon out of office. He only resigned when it became clear that he would be Impeached and thrown out of office if he didn't.
But the GOP of 1974 is NOT the GOP of 2016.
Democracy---at the end of the day----is an social contract. Its an agreement between the peoples of a nation that we will give our ultimate loyalty do the RULE OF LAW, and to the PROCESS of self-government above any personal ambitions or tribal loyalties.
But--disturbingly---there seems to be a growing willingness on both sides of the aisle (Right >> Left) to put partisanship above the welfare of the nation and the democratic process...and that is how democracies are ultimately GIVEN away.
Yes. Democracies are seldom conquered for without. They are given away form within. By citizens who put other agendas above it. They'd rather rule in "hell" than share power in "heaven".
So...I'll be frank....just as the GOP has had little stomach to stand up to Trumps shameless demagoguery during the campaign...I have little faith in their stomach to stand up to any extra-constitutional abuses that a Trump Presidency might want to engage in.
Because having things THEIR WAY is more important than HOW they got that way....or the consequences that result from them.
Like a friend of mine who has such strong need to be right that she'd literally burn the house down around the both of you simply to win an argument. Here need to be right having very few limits.
