After hearing rumors for a couple of weeks that Destiny 2 would be a fresh start I was initially pissed. Like most people, I took Bungie on its word that we would be able to take our characters throughout the full 10 year journey. After thinking about it for awhile, I started thinking of a way that everyone can be happy and how everything can make sense from a lore perspective.
Basically, have Bungie release a summer update just prior to Destiny 2. This update would deactivate the tower as we know it, that's right, tower would no longer be a social space. Instead Arachs, leader of Dead Orbit, upon learning that the speaker is pulling the strings behind SIVA escapes to join Salidin at the Iron Temple. The tower as we know it becomes infested with SIVA prompting the vanguard to flee. The whole expansion will center around reuniting the Vanguard and taking back the Tower from the speaker.
After reuniting the Vanguard you unlock a new mini raid located on the tower called extermination protocol. It is learned that the only hope for preserving humanity is to sacrifice the light. As in, upon killing the speaker your character's light is extinguished and embedded in the rubble of the tower. The final cutscene would be Cabal carrying away rubble of the old Tower.
Destiny 2 can start a few hundred years later by your character being resurrection on the far reaches of wherever by your new ghost. Your old weapons are obsolete as it is the future now but they are relics of the past that can be used at the beginning of the game. Players can select a legacy set from Destiny 1 to function as these relics to begin their journey into Destiny 2.
This would kind of tie together the two Destiny games and would afford Bungie the opportunity to fresh start Destiny 2 as this segue is left open ended. The Cabal and all current enemy races could be extinct by Destiny 2, heck they could be allies. Doesn't matter, it effectively ends Destiny 1 and transitions our current characters into Destiny 2, allows for new characters, and essentially frees Destiny 2 from constraints of Destiny 1.

Sounds interesting. Although another thing they can do is let you have an ally that is a former guardian which would be a generic guardian or whatever if you start a new save but if you import your save that would be your old character or your main old character. Anyhow we'll see what happens. I also posted ideas for new features in destiny 2 if you want to check it out but ya cool ideas :)
