Please Just Be Honest And Admit That Science Is A Religion, YOUR Religion.

Science is a religion. It may not have prayers, but it has formulas any aspiring scientist must learn by heart. It may not have priests, but it has revered specialists who walk about in white coats. It may not have sacrifices, but it daily takes the lives of rodents and primates to further its cause. It may not have rituals, but experiments are performed again and again; as if repeatability holds the key to knowledge. Science may not have holy books, but it has countless papers written in Journals: places of authority every scientist must reference to legitimize his own work. It may not pass the donation plate on Sunday, but why should it? Rich men give to it, and governments honour it with their patronage. Religion predicts a final peace in which the world is made perfect. Science promises a future without disease, hunger, poverty, or even death. How is science any different from religion? You gladly throw away religion and accept the "facts". But what are "facts"? And what makes them safe principles on which to base your knowledge? Look around you. As long as you look to science for the Answers (with a capital "A"), science is your faith. Why can't you see that facts do not represent pure truth? Truth lies beyond what you think you see. It exists in "how you see". Science is religion.

  • A religion has two components: 1. A cosmology: it explains why the world is the way it is 2. A moral code: it explains how to behave Science lacks #2 so I wouldn't call it a religion.

      • The funny thing is that, for once, you aren't 100% wrong. There actually are people that treat science like a religion. That said, that's not what science itself is. In the most basic of senses, science is the ultimate evolutionary goal of religion as the process for for explaining our reality. The inevitable acknowledgment of our lack of knowledge and the pursuit of further understanding. To claim they are exactly the same is to dispute human advancement, which is folly. That said, imperfection plagues all facets of humanity.

        • Time to build my atheist Trump wall of text NOTE: I'm adding to this as I go, so keep that in mind, nothings final. 1. Science is the honest (debatebly) pursuit of knowledge and understanding, trying to figure out how everything works. 2. Religion is similar to Science in the way that it attempts to answer the same / if not similar questions to Science.
so in this respect they're similar, I'll give you that
3. Religion is based off of belief and faith in the person(s) that claims the religion is true. You cannot prove any of religions claims are true (I.e god, the devil, creationism etc). 4. Science is based of logic, theories, testing, retesting, and even more retesting. It's "teachings" are not set in stone and are constantly being improved and replaced. Religion does not do this. 5. How can you call science a religion? Because scientists are in lab coats, therefore they're equivalent to priests? Most religions teachings are based off writings that are 100s, if not 1000s of years old. They are not testable, therefore there isn't concrete evidence to prove whether religion is true. 6. Everything that science claims is fact, can be tested and proven, is there anything that religion states, that can be logically proven? More incoming in the following days...

          • Science is a religion in a sense. A appropriate thing is science is a belief. Science is used by everyone but it isn't my religion. I think Science is more of a way to explain things that happen in the world with conventional means

              • I would agree science is a religion to a certain degree. It's definitely not a religion that asks you to just believe and your faith will be rewarded. Science is based on trial and error, seeing where the limits are, and if they can be broken. A hypothesis may turn to fact one day and then be refuted another other other new evidence. That's why experiments are performed over and over again with different variables. Science is not a collusion of all scientists. There is competition and rivalries. It is impossible for someone to make an outrageous claim and not have it investigated by other parties.

                  • So im liking this thread. How do you people know a landed on the moon? Some goverment program told us about it. How do we now the earth is round. Some side told us about it? How do we know terrorists did 9/11? Again someone told us it was so. How do you know we're not nutrients for a crazed machine god trapped in some comatose of interconnectedness slowly being drained of life. Well that's a movie

                  • I know you just post stupid stuff because you have nothing better to do, but tonight I don't either. Religion; the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. Science; the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. No overlap here. Science does not fit the definition of religion in any way, shape or form.

                          • Science isn't a faith. As interesting as it is, science is limited to only what the human mind can perceive and process which is good! We aim to understand everything we CAN understand (in our minds). Religion is a stab in the dark at what we can't understand. A smart man would know reality can't be proven, everything we'll ever know is just in our minds. To succumb to that and believe there is something more is faith, that's where Religion steps in

                            • Faith =/= facts A fact is something which has been proven to be true. Faith is believing in something that there is no evidence for or against.
