Yeah, those guys I kind of feel bad for. They didn't want this. But because of Sister Friede taking the light away, the painted world began to "rot" The painter himself was trapped in the painting, and the people within it began rotting away along with what's left of the painting. As the painting shrivelled, so did they. Some even turned to hunting each other, to gain the favour of Sister Friede, but to no avail. So yeah. They have it rough.
