On your way back ,you come across a boy around Artemis' age with a dark blue tail and ears. He's just wearing some ragged shorts which allows you to see his perfectly fit body. You caught him in what seems to be a training exercise as he's balancing on one foot on a small rock in the middle of a river.
-
I stop dead in my tracks, and look over at the boy. What the hell was he doing here? Unless... Was he like Artemis? Could he not turn into a wolf? Only one way to find out. "Hey, kid! Who are you?"
-
The boy stays perfectly balanced on the rock and speaks calmly. "I am Aethos. What is your name, outsider?"
-
"Grant. Ranger Grant. Why're you out here all alone, kid? Did the others back at the camp send you out like they did Artemis?"
-
The boy shakes his head at first, but seems to get interested upon hearing Artemis' name. "No, I just come out to train. Do you know..." He looks around to make sure no clan members are nearby. "...Artemis?"
-
"Yeah, I do know her. I know how they're fûcking torturing her in that goddamn cave because she was late. All because of me. But no, they won't listen, so now next time I see her she probably won't just have a shit-ton of cuts and bruises, now she's gonna be missing HER GODDAMN FINGERS! Or at least that's my fûcking speculation." I clear my throat. I get a little pissed off. "Sorry about that... I just get a little angry when I know someone's hurting a kid and getting away with it. But yes, I do know Artemis."
-
Aethos gets an upset expression. "She was late again? I swear Artemis wants to be punished sometimes. Great, now I'm going to be standing around wishing I could do something to stop the punishment for the rest of the day."
-
"I would try to if I was allowed in. But the code says no. And really, I say fûck the code, but my opinion doesn't matter I guess. And the two people that came to talk to me were nice at first, until one of them said the wrong thing and I asked a question. Listen, if you can, tell me what happens to Artemis, okay? She's just a damn kid, she doesn't deserve all the shit she gets."
-
Aethos nods. "No, Artemis doesn't deserve it. Just because of one stupid 'flaw' she's seen as a worthless piece of meat and it isn't right. I can't wait for the day I can save her."
-
"Jesus fûcking Christ finally! Someone who sees things my way! It's goddamn inhumane! Wait, why are you not brainwashed like the other wolfies back there? And no, that wasn't racist it's just shorter than werewolves."
-
Aethos sighs as his face turns a slight red. "Because I've been her best friend since I can remember. We used to play together all the time and she'd slways beat me, but never gloated. Eventually the stupid runt thing happened when we both turned eight. All werewolves learn to transform at age six and she was eight. Lucky for me, I actually could transform at five years old because I'm a so called prodigy. Now, at eight it became apparent that she was never transforming and because of her mother being dead her father would never have more children. Her father was outraged, he's the last of the strongest bloodline in the clan and his daughter can't transform? Who would mate with her? He thought his bloodline was doomed, so he blamed Artemis and gave her the lowest social ranking possible, runt. I continued to be her friend, but eventually she stopped seeing herself equal to me and then even later thought she wasn't worth my time. I was crushed by what they had done to her. Breaking her and reshaping her into a slave to fit any need? Despicable. When we turn eighteen I'll be old enough to challenge her father and if I win I can save her. That's why I'm training out here, for her. To get my friend Artemis back."
-
"Kid, if you're training for something that noble, I may just be able to help you out. I can show you a thing or two about stomping someone into the goddamn dirt. They won't be expecting any human moves, will they? Could show you a thing or two, if you like. Just a warning, though. I don't go easy on people."
-
He shakes his head. "I need to use our way of fighting. They'll know I got outsider help and I'd be disqualified. But thank you, Grant. For helping my friend "
-
"Can you at least tell me what they do to her in there? I know it's not good... I just gotta know. If I don't... Then I don't think I can rest right."
-
Aethos seems to get extremely depressed. "I-I don't want to talk about it."
-
"Oh. Okay, kid. I get it. Won't bring it up again. Wait. I just thought of something. Do you werewolves work like medieval ones? Can you make other people into werewolves?"
-
He shakes his head. "No and what's a med ival..meed ivel werewolf?"
-
"Werewolves from a long damn time ago. You guys are practically the same, save for when they bite someone and leave them alive, the person turns into a werewolf. Met one once. He was a pretty nice guy."
-
He seems curious. "That sounds interesting. Also, I turn 18 in five days so...there is an old rule that would allow me to bring an outsider in to watch the fight...you interested?
-
"You'd better believe it. I wanna see you beat the bastard that's been torturing kids into the dirt. Blood on the sands. Crimson in the water. Lay him out. Make him do the knockdown tango. In short, fûck him up so bad you can't even see his face anymore. Huh. It's a little ironic, isn't it? I'm more bloodthirsty than a werewolf. And that leader guy you're talking about is a dick. He snarled at me when I asked him for someone to come talk to me. In short, yes, it'd be my honor."
-
Aethos seems a little shocked st the enthusiasm. "I mean, I wish I could do that to him, but we don't fight to the death and me beating him at all is already unlikely. I highly doubt I'll be crushing him."
-
"Listen, kid. The best thing to do on a one-on-one without guns is to get angry. Real fûcking angry. It's what I do when I fight those crimson bastards across the way. I've beaten a Legate to death with that anger, and that's no small task. If you put the Legate and one of your best werewolves in there head-to-head, I'd put money on the Legate. Now, imagine how angry I'd have to get to beat him. Get that angry. Think of the horrible things he's doing. Doing to Artemis, doing to whoever else. Kick the shit out of him."
-
He shakes his head. "I believe the best course of action is a clear mind. To beat her father with what he lacks, focus and percision. That is what the ancient fighting style I'm using requires. Peace."
-
"Out of my 27 years of fighting have I ever heard that and the person didn't die the next day. Be careful, kid. Peace of mind can't get you everywhere in a fight. It won't get you anywhere unless you know what you're doing."
-
Aethos nods. "Thank you, Grant. But I believe I know more about the situation than you do. Trust me, I have thought this through."
