The Bandwagon Effect
The Bandwagon Effect is a phenomenon in which people do or say something just because others are doing it, regardless whether or not it's true or if any evidence to support it exists. In the case of the #offtopic forums, this is seen very often and is usually how memes and copy pastas start, as well as rumors about other forum members.
A great example of this was the octagon trend, in which forum users posted threads and comments relating to anything resembling the shape of an octagon. There was no real meaning behind it, and held no actual forum value but since everyone was doing it, hey it must be cool to follow along.
The Bandwagon effect can often be mistaken for a meme, since they're practically the same thing.
#OFFTOPIC For Dummies is a series of threads in which I try to go over the various things I've found on these forums during my stay here. They may not always be accurate, but I'll try to include as many facts as I can. If you'd like to read the rest of the threads in this series, click on the #otfordummies hashtag under the original post. If you enjoy this thread and want to see more, consider liking/upvoting it so I can see how many people are actually interested. Thank you <3
