And that's where I came in. I'd walked by, in my normal military fatigues, right sleeve rolled up to the nonexistent shoulder. I spotted the kid, looking down at her in pity. I didn't dare get too close.
"Hey there, kiddo. You alright? You look scared."
I put on my gentlest tone, I was just trying to help.

She looked up at him, backing away a little. Her eyes were bloodshot from crying. She whimpered, obviously scared of him. Heck, she was scared of everyone.
-
"Kid, I'm not here to hurt you. What would a guy with one arm be able to do to hurt someone? I want to help."
-
She shook a little, calming down, as in her fear leaving. Grief soon set in and she was crying, falling on her side.
-
I leaned down, and picked the girl up, comforting her in my one arm. "Hey... Kiddo... It'll be alright. If something bad happened, you're safe now. It'll be alright."
-
She hugged him, crying into his shoulder/neck area. She sobbed, shivering as she was still cold, even under the blanket.
-
I began to carry her back to my room, I'd find something to warm her up.
-
She continued shivering. Her crying had died down to a couple sniffles. She gazed off dreamily, not quite focusing on anything.
-
We eventually reached the room, and I sat her down on the couch. I took the blanket from my bed, and covered her with it. I sat down beside her. "You poor thing...."
-
She shivered still, wiping her eyes with her shaky hand.
