What does your Faction mean to you?

Hello and welcome Guardians! for those who still recognize my name it's been a while, for everyone else, HELLO! i'm AnonPig, i do the lore things. But today I'm here to ask you that very simple question, there are three Factions in Destiny and they all have their own philosophical stance on how to do things in the Destiny Universe, i align with Dead Orbit myself because i feel it's the most logical answer. Holding on to our planets and our lost Golden Age is a mistake, we can find a better life out there among a different star. so what does your Faction mean to you? (answers may be read on the corresponding Faction episode of my podcast the Destiny Lore Cast, go check out our episode with Baxter from https://www.ishtar-collective.net linked above!)

  • It meant something in year one when I was more conscious about Int/Dis build (FWC), getting black shaders (DO) and getting the old titan armor from NM. Philosophically, they aren't of any significance, because their beliefs don't change the story or game play. I've obtained all three exotic class items on the warlock and titan and am just starting them on the hunter, so that's something (I guess). Also, I'm still trying to get a poor-man's Fatebringer from FWC (The Wail). My faction choices are driven by gear, not philosophy.

    • I find my relation to each faction to be one of "a means to an end". I hate the factions, but I also don't completely agree with any of them. The war cults mentality of we are always at war makes them prepared, but at the same time it leaves them no other avenues for other forms of thought. Tunnel vision leaves one unprepared. New Monarchy's vision of an absolute ruler has been proven multiple times in history to be flawed. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Dead Orbit, for all intents and purposes is probably the most likely faction I would chose if I had too, even they are not without flaw. Cutting and running isn't a bad idea, but it's not an easy one either. Where would we run too? There are so few planets that naturally support life, and even in that small percentage we probably wouldn't even find a planet that meets some, let alone all, our needs. It would be more probable to build our own planet to support our needs than find one that could support a fraction of them. And in order to build a planet that supports our needs, we need to collect resources from the one place available, that takes time, and that's not even including how we would even move all the materials.

    • Dead Orbit: Life is a cruel one. The shadows of the darkness have already corrupted the Tower. New Monarchy: All things are peaceful. There is no time to explain any chaos. Future War Cult: We're at war with New Monarchy. Commander? Com- Try to find the hidden Easter egg! (Hint: It's a weapon.)

They don't do anything that align to their meaning anyways so who cares. PvP should have faction wars like Lost Planet 2.

        • Means I'm collecting a ship or sparrow for the kiosk. Otherwise, nothing. Who cares about the factions or anything in terms of narrative from the past 2 years 4 months? As for staying to fight or leaving, I've got plot armour; it's no more logical to leave than to stay because my character can't lose.

        • Anon - Glad to see you back again on the forums. Let's see - what do factions mean to me... Shaders, emblems, ships and now sparrows, ghosts and 390 legendary gear. Seriously - I too find myself more in-line with DO, but not in the same way that you do. I have trouble following a faction that wants nothing more than to install a Totalitarian government (NM) and I believe that there is always a non-aggressive solution to problems and not relying on always fighting (FWC)

A little random and off subject but what about, Suros, Hakke & Omolon? Personally, I like Suros & Omolon's designs, and they seem more fluid than Hakke. Not talking about stability, the sound effects etc.

                  • I just use my faction for their gear. If they have sweet gear that I want, I join them for a bit until I get the rolls I want. After that I drop them like a bad habit and move on to the next. That being said, and to contradict myself, FWC 4 life! :)

                  • My loyalty is to the C.O.G. With that in mind, the only faction in destiny that actually works towards a real solution is the future war cult. As the darkness pushes further and further into the system, the words of Prescott should be ringing in your head as he says, "soon we will have nothing left to defend. That leaves us with only one option: Attack!" It is not the easiest solution, but the war cult is the only faction that offers to truely deal with the problem at hand and then ready the world to prevent it from ever being a problem again. New monarchy has their heart in the right place, and their ideas may be the most beneficial to humanity in the long term. But they don't offer a solution that really works to ensure that long term survival to begin with. Don't get me wrong, the fortification and maintaining of the last city and other key settlements is essential to maintaining a foothold against the enemy. However, you can't really expand on rebuilding the world to its former glory if you don't deal with forces that ended that age to begin with and then set up defenses to keep it from happening again. I like new monarchy, but their ideas would be more useful once the war is over. The logic of dead orbit is that if an optimistic coward. If the darkness in destiny is truely as dangerous and powerful as you claim, then surrendering your worlds will only be a temporary distraction that permanently sacrifices the footholds humanity would need to fight back. You would live in fear for few short generations as you desperately try to keep running from an enemy that will never stop hunting you. Your ships will fail as they become damaged or malfunction over time because you wouldn't have a steady supply of parts and materials nor a safe place to stop and perform major repairs because you gave up such places to begin your life amongst the stars. The total population of survivors in the fleet would never be able to reproduce and ensure the long term survival of humanity because either constant attacks would make people unwilling to bring children into such a nightmare, or the survivors would not be allowed to bring children onto your already over populated ships (assuming that you at least tried to save passengers of other ships before they were destroyed or left behind in disrepair). Those aren't potential possibilities, both will happen. Dead orbit logic will lead humanity to meet one of two long term fates: They could starve or die of disease as overpopulation stresses their sanitary and life support systems to the breaking point, causing them to shut down. Or they could die as their ships become too crippled to run away or defend themselves as they're either picked off by the darkness or are "tactically" left behind by the rest of the fleet. This doesn't even consider the long term political and social interactions between the ships of the fleet as they're faced with these technical and moral dilemmas. If the fleet doesn't split apart after realizing and disagreeing with long term plans and realities, they may very well start firing on each other as disagreements arise and hatred grows towards the leaders and supports of dead orbit for putting them into a nightmare from which they can never escape.

                  • Fwc is pretty interesting cause of how they're kinda tied with the vex. Dead orbit is meh... New monarchy lol joke. Now let's see what lysander is. I have a feeling that the next content drop it allow you to go against the consensus (vanguard) cause in the original planned game ... You had the choice of being a good or bad guardian. I'm just saying. Would be cool if they brought it back with that faction too.
Destiny is so dry.
