The City already has a government. It's called the Consensus and it's a republic. It's has existed for at least a couple centuries, prevented humanity's extinction at least once, and has only a single notable failure in all that time that isn't even their fault to begin with. NM wants to overthrow it for no good and replace it with a single all powerful ruler. Screw NM.

  • That's right. The City has a government, and it does a fine job of treading water. It's keep humanity alive with few blunders. New Monarchy wants it to evolve into something that can make humanity thrive. Everyone keeps saying we want to overthrow the current system, but that's not really correct. Remember Bannerfall? We stopped it from being overthrown because what we want is for everyone to come together and chose our new leader. We're aware of the dangers and we have worked in the past to prevent tyranny. We are looking for a benevolent philosopher king (or queen). We don't want a Mao or Stalin, we want a Hammurabi or an Augustus. Someone who can lead us and guide our growing civilization. When the Dreadnought arrived, what saved us wasn't the council. What made the difference was one leader, Cayde-6, going behind everyone's back and sending either lone guardians or small fireteams on secret missions that had not been approved of by the rest of the Vanguard or the Speaker. Under our current system, that's illegal, but I think it was the only way to succeed. Cayde might not be my first choice for a leader, but he shows that often one person in charge can get results where a council flounders.

  • Say every thing goes well for NM and the city government disbands itself and a benevolent dictator is installed. What do you think will happen to all the guardians? Do you think they'll just forego their previous allegences or ideas? Do you think the fringe groups will quietly accept the lose of what little power they had? A successful New Monarchy will only divide the guardian and civilian ranks almost as badly as the faction wars. It is a foolish errand to consolidation of power in a time when flexability is key.

  • You're ignoring the fact that things are exponentially better and continue to improve under the Consensus. Cayde's plan working out because of dumb luck and the plot demanding it doesn't make it suddenly a good idea. You want to put all of humanity's fate in the hands of a single person. The greatest person to have ever lived isn't worthy of that responsibility. Humans are imperfect by nature, and for such a position nothing short of perfection is required. That goes doubly when the faction attempting to instate this person follows a ideology that reads like a paraphrasing of Benito Mussolini's personal description of fascism. So much so many people in the lore clans affectionately refer to the NM as "the spacenazis" because "vaguely fascist absolute dictatorship" is just too annoying to use with consistency.

I'm sure that Cayde would claim that dumb luck is just one of the many skills he brings to the Vanguard. You do bring up a number of valid concerns. All humans are flawed and fallible. The main difference between the NM's end goal and our current status quo is that instead of just one flawed person in charge we have a handful of flawed people in charge. We are still tempting fascism, but with an oligarchy instead of a dictator. It will just take them a bit longer make up their minds. Yes, things are slowly getting better. The key word is slowly. When an emergency happens, we need quick decisive action, and that's the one thing that committees, parliaments, and senates do poorly. If we were in a different type of situation, the Consensus might be the best choice, but we are in a post apocalyptic mankind on the brink of extinction situation. A couple of hundred years of the Consensus has only gotten us survival. Most of the better has happened in the last couple of years. Reestablishing contact with the reef, putting some sort of armed presence on the moon and other former colonies in the solar system, the humbling of a number of the Fallen houses, and the crushing of the leadership of the Hive? Just the last 3 years. The Consensus has kept us alive, but we need more that to just live. We need to grow. Ask the FWC, danger is on the way, and we are going to need a strong leader to guide us through it. Otherwise you better hope we have some more dumb luck saved up.
