The Man On High Mountain
Ko Rudo Mountains
11:48 AM
Among the many peaks of the Ko Rudo mountains, there is one whose top is flat, the head of it sheered off during the first of the invasions. It is on of the taller peaks, providing an overview of the world surrounding it, and has been marked as one of the greater places on the vast planet to visit, if only for the view and the stillness of it. However, since it's production at the hands of mankind, there has been a solitary guardian of the peak.
A quiet man, he does not tend to interact with the Dojo and its peoples often, only ever coming down to buy and take up supplies to build...something. He does not even purchase food or drink, and yet must have some form of sustenance, as he has only ever been seen on the mountain or in the market for a few months now. Efforts to reach the peak and it's protector are not resisted, and many have made the journey, returning with stories provided by the man, given to them out of hospitality.
They also bring news of a developing structure atop the peak. A building of wood and stone, those who see it remark to others on their return of the antiquity of the building. After a time, the structure finally began to take shape as the man worked ceaselessly, stopping only to provide company and hospitality to those who would visit. As such, his pace carried the project on rapidly, and it turned out to be something altogether wonderful in its simplicity.
The man had built a Church.
It was comprised of a main structure, a large room in the shape of a circle around an upraised altar space, with rooms branching off at four equidistant points set to face in the cardinal directions of the compass. These rooms were made for the Priest, the Altar Servers, the Confessional, and the Sacristy. Where he had received the supplies other than what he gained in the market was a mystery, as musical instruments and pews were already furnished within the building.
It also already held stained glass windows, colored to show images of scenes in the Bible, starting from the Old Testament at the front of the building, and going on to the Resurrection. Alcoves all over were filled with icons, images of the Saints and the Prophets. However, the most noticeable ornament was a Crucifix, facing the doors, made life-size and hanging about a man's height over the altar.
With the structure made and made open, the man set to work on the path up to the altar, carving steps from the rocky path he himself had taken in his first ascent of the mountain. Ever did he work, and he had still more to do. Occasionally, others came and aided him for a time, but mostly he worked alone, or so it seemed. Indeed, he spent most of his time in prayer, often focusing more on it than on the project he was working on at the moment.
For those who accompanied him, he was amiable enough, but most time was spent in silent companionship. Indeed, he seemed to be mentally preparing himself for something, much as one who steadies themselves before a battle. Perhaps this was his way of coping with the recent invasions, but no, he'd been fending those off relatively easily. No, this was something else entirely.
His work was fervent, fevered almost. He did not cease, pause, or otherwise distract himself. He was like a man who's time was coming up on him. However, to those who inquired, he hid his sadness. He put them forward, and made his priority the guests themselves. Even so was he one day, when someone came up behind him as he gave shape to the next step up to the Church on the Mountain.
